US Tariffs

Some cool stuff I have learned/heard in the past few weeks, and some random thoughts.
1. A survey was done that reveals 50% of Trump voters only read at a grade 6 level. 30% of Trump voters read at below a grade 6 level. 20% of Trump voters are completely illiterate. I'm not sure how accurate that is though. You would think that Vance and Musk must be able to read at a better than grade 6 level.
2. Trump's style of diplomacy was compared to the barbarians where the only thing they knew how to do is slash and burn the next village over, and steal all their stuff.
3. No credible economist, in the world, believes that tariffs are a good idea. Tariffs, the wide sweeping ones, are generally the death knell of an economy.
4. The current tariff environment is eerily similar to the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930.
5. If the current tariff environment continues, it is believed to be highly unlikely that any successors of Trump will be able to undo the damage done to the US reputation and economy.
6. It has been said that this is one of the most important times in the history of mankind because we have front row seats to witness the death of an empire. The die is cast.

On a personal note, Canadians really need to get their head's out of their asses, quit f*cking around, and elect a government that is going to nix the climate action, net zero, DEI, woke AF bullsh*t. Put this country back on the road to prosperity, and do it in a hurry. Bulldoze pipelines through east and west, and steamroll whoever, and whatever, gets in the way. Twin the Trans-Canada instead of building some stupid ass high speed rail line between Toronto and Montreal. LET'S GO GLOBAL !!!

. The United States of America will never again be what it once was. China will be the new big kid on the block, so we all might as well get used to it.
. South Korea will be the new go-to when the free world wants to buy weapons.
. Poland is quite likely to be the new economic and military powerhouse of Europe.
. Zelensky rocks !!!
. Musk has crossed that fine line between total genius and absolutely f*uckin' nuts. If ever there was a poster child for a straight jacket and a rubber room, he's your guy.
@Michael Ludwig for PM!

You've got my vote sir!

Agree with everything other than the high speed rail.. yes we need it in our main densely populated corridors. Europe has had it for 40 years.. Look at Spain.. they've had HSR for 32 years now AND they have a beautiful highway system and well maintained infrastructure.

We are falling behind... have a look at Spain, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy in particular. HSR... excellent roads.. the average person speaks three languages (one of them being English).. supermarkets are more plentiful and have way more variety than anything over here.

Downtown to downtown at 300 km per hour.. no airport BS..we're not Nigeria or Congo.

May as well be without a proper 4 lane highway across the north in Ontario. The carnage up there daily is unbelievable. Heck when one bridge (Nipigon a couple years ago) can shut down the entire Canadian transportation infrastructure thinking the road over a train that will be too damn expensive to ride on anyway (based of pricing we have done in the past to take a train across Canada) is a bigger priority IMHO.

Well he removed them on Mexico - only a matter of time, will do it on Canada, and we will continue to be stuck in this back and forth

i dont think our leadership is going to accept another pause. There is absolutely no good reason for these Tarrifs, the research is there, both countries benefit with free trade. If Mexico does that's good for them, but with the leverage we have we should be getting a better deal. The US has treated us very poorly, with all the illegal guns pouring in and killing people on our streets, especially in BC. They have treated us very poorly.

Fluctuating, on again off again tariffs are worse for the economy than having the actual tariffs. As we all know, uncertainty plays havoc with stock markets, consumer confidence and the economy in general. The only thing that is going to bring some semblance of sanity to this whole thing is for Trump to listen to industry leaders, as he just did with the automakers, and turn his twisted, juvenile attention to something else besides global economics. He is so far out of his league on this file, it is beyond laughable.

Governor Trump and his entourage of fuck witted lapdogs didn’t even think to consult with industry before implementing the tariffs..hence the 30 day automotive reprieve less than 24 hours after the tariffs came in. Clearly they’ve given no thought to this..no planning..no consultation..just the fentanyl BS to justify it.

Can't wait for the auto industry to get absolutely blasted for the next 2-4 years it takes to build plants in America, I wonder how many of them will actually even make it that far. I hope Orange Man has some nice hefty bailout packages ready.

There are many towns in the rust belt with empty car manufacturing plants.
Maybe that's part of the problem that's driving this tariff push.

I don't know what a "fuck witted lapdog" is, but I will be using that line at my next forced dinner appearance when the SIL starts spewing her rhetoric

It would still take 2-4 years to update and retool even an abandoned plant, all this is doing is giving Euro and Asian Auto MFGs an open window to gain market share, which just further disadvantages American producers. This is a long game, one that you won't see any positive results during this current administration, and the chance that the next administration will undo this trade mess is very likely. Most republican governors and senators from red states are not in support of this, their constituents are the ones that will suffer.

Big boys are collecting their discounted shares at the moment, tariffs will be over when they tell Donny they're good to go. No worries friends, not much longer now.

Canada and Mexico tariffs called off same day, of course after the market was allowed to dump a little bit. Too predictable.

US liquor back on the shelves I guess, until April 2. Those liquor store workers are getting a good workout for sure..
Fordsy holding strong on the no liquor on the shelves apparently.

Also, been trying to confirm, but heard all the LCBO liquor is on consignment and not actually purchased ahead of time. Google says there is definitely a consignment program but seems like for small producers. If true for larger ones, pulling it really does hurt.

Even if the product has been paid for, it hurts. no sales means no product turns, no reorders.

Let me tell you, folks, all Canadian countermeasures remain firmly in place, every single one of them. And let me be very clear: our neighbors down south, they have not treated us fairly. Not even close. It’s been one-sided, it’s been unfair, and quite frankly, it’s been a disgrace. A simple pause? That’s not good enough. Not even close to good enough. Canada deserves real, tangible action, not just empty promises. We need fairness, we need respect, and until that happens, our countermeasures stay exactly where they are. (In my best DJT voice)
