There are several other boards if you look for them. None with the client base (both carrier and broker) that LL has. I've got to be honest, I've met a bunch of their employees over the years, they are nice people. The company offers a service that many people in transport need from time to time to supplement thier existing relationships. It's a great tool to help brokers and carriers alike expand into new lanes or cover existing business if their regular provider (or freight) isn't there. I just wonder if people harp on LL for legit reasons, or just to complain. I didn't feel the cost was 'way out of line'.
Yes, there is a cost to membership like anyting else. I forget the exact math at my former employer, but we were a high tier, including DAT, etc. and I recall it was approximately the average margin for 1 load per user per month. The service helped us far greater than the cost so it was kind of a no brainer.
For some, it's a great and helpful service, for others like Mr. Ludwig, maybe not so helpful so he's saving his cash. It's that simple.
