So we pull a load for:

RPM Expedite
100 exhange drive, ste 8
Brampton, ON

Link TCC score of 90 something, and credit with us was ok. Issue is not getting paid for the load. But we load on Oct 8th in Quakertown, PA a meat load. Send all documents to Cole the broker they received and we confirmed. All good at that point driver carriers on. Oct 10th advised that paperwork rejected and we are to turn around and head to Detroit, MI. Truck is in Minny at this point, confirm turn around and additional costs on 1385 miles for about 3000.00 bucks.

Again we did everything we were supposed to, even confirmed with Cole that the customer was made aware on Oct 9th that the papers were rejected. No one notified us.

Needless to say RPM ( Ryan Bragg ) says we screwed up as we didn't call the broker back more often and says we are only entitled to $500.00 bucks.

Just thought I'd put that out there, as a carrier we do allot in good faith and once things go sideways brokers and customers do all they can not to pay anything.

Should have had it in writing on the Saturday that they will pay additional costs before we even turn around.

Hindsight sure can be 20/20. A $3000.00 add-on might require a bit more confirmation than a phone call, regardless if you were dealing with a third party or not. No question, you did everything you were asked to do. Hope you can get a satisfactory resolution. You might need some help from the customs broker to back-up your position.

Thanks Loaders yeah Cole did confirm and we did provide information to RPM about this. I have taken this further up with their GM and owner and will update thread. Just need to ensure I'm on top of posting this stuff so I can get tips further beyond that of my experience. It was tough on the Saturday we're only open Monday to Friday and on call through the weekend. I trusted that we'd be covered for the associated costs knowing that we did what was right. I mean it's easy send the docs confirm they have them and start driving. Our phone, fax and email dam even our website info was sent to Cole. Really they should have called us to let us know it was rejected. UPS called me on a load yesterday that was having troubles. Customs brokers can be so un helpful.

Just a follow up for everyone. Again as noted we confirmed that the broker Cole international had informed the customer about the rejection. So after Paul the GM reviews this his response is that the carrier should never leave the shipper until the load is set up or cleared. He suggested that RPM Expedite trucks do not leave shippers until loads are cleared ( I have this in print ) very wrong for us carriers running west isn't it. Needless to say brokers don't pay us to sit at the shipper and wait what may be a couple days for loads to clear. So it would seem like RPM just does not want to pay for making a truck turn around in Minny and running back to Detroit, MI. So we're out 3000 k. The reason I share this is because their TCC score is good but it would seem that if there is an issue over and above some standard waiting time they will screw you likely due to their customer wanting to screw you. Details noted below to original load, only place we screwed up was not making the carrier send a revised fax on the Saturday saying they would pay the extra 3000.00, of course being at home at the time I didn't have access to the miler, but Ryan Baggs emailed that we would be covered I guess $500.00 is what RPM believes it's worth to run from Minny to Detroit and back again. So if your looking for a cheap carrier, and have need a carrier to sit at a shipper until the load is cleared you know who to call.

Depending on whether or not you want to do any more business with RPM, would there be anything to gain by bringing this incident to the attention of the shipper/receiver, or whoever is responsible for the freight charges? Ultimately, they are responsible to ensure that their goods cross the border properly and they are the ones who pay for the services of Cole Customs Brokers to ensure that happens. The fault for this entire episode lies with the goods being refused entry in the first place, something neither you nor RPM could control. However, none of this excuses RPM's refusal to acknowledge the addition expense you incurred to satisfy their customer, so perhaps bringing this to the attention of the importer might be in order. Who knows, maybe they'll be a bit more sympathetic to your position?

Another update on this Ryan from RPM Expedite has now refused to pay anything extra at all. We did hold the POD in hopes they would come to some thought process that would take care of a carrier. I guess not. Thanks for everyone who responded and I hope that if when dealing with them and meat inspections you get it in writing that any mileage additionally is that of the broker. Really the whole thing is ridiculous I've been brokering freight for years if this happened to us i'd be paying the truck.

I would be calling the shipper, receiver and finding out who is paying the freight and trying to get resolution from them. Dirty pool RPM.. dirty pool. Just a guess here, but I would say the load was co-brokered as they say in Quebec.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but as a small carrier you have to take a broker at his or her word when issues arise on the weekend. For them to say yes no problem we will work out a deal and then only offer $500 bucks is BS from the start on Minny to Detroit and back, but then for them to even balk at that is just bad business.

If have never done work for RPM Expedite and after this thread I will sure be careful if I ever do to get all of our ducks in a row and everything on paper before we do.

Sry to bring this back from the dead but I was thinking of pulling a load for RPM and did a quick search. If I read between the lines this was a load from PA to AB that was redirected to Detroit while you were passing Minny. If that is correct are you saying they paid you nothing at all? or the full rate to Alberta?

Mark D yes, that is the case, they were updated all along and knew we left the shipper and only after a day plus decided that it had to be inspected in Detroit. It was never advised nor confirmed. At the time we were a bit newer and had not done much in the meat world. And they never paid anything extra we went right up the food chain they continued to say we neglected to update them which we did. Have been on our DNU list every since we still haul produce and meat but would never haul for them again unless i can get about 5.00 per mile. Just not classy folks.
