Taking a load from a freight broker as either a carrier or as another freight broker, and then re-selling that load to another carrier for profit, loss or break even, is double brokering. It is wrong on a number of different levels. First, it dilutes the rate to the end carrier, the one doing the actual work. We do not need any more downward pressure on rates. Second, it removes or diminishes the control that the original broker had over the load which is what his customer expected from him. If you don’t know who is hauling the freight, how can you be honest and forthcoming with your client? Thirdly, it opens the door to a possible situation where someone, either the owner of the goods or the original broker has to pay the same freight bill twice. If the end party doesn’t get paid for whatever reason, they will work their way back up the chain to find someone who will pay, even if they have already paid. There are countless other reasons why double brokering is dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. Space prevents me from listing them all. Best advice…..just don’t do it!
