Hi All

Does anyone know who I can talk to about confirming if I need to do 72hr prenotice to customs for a skid steer with a Honda Engine on it. PA to ON

Thanks

you don't, 72hrs is for self propelled going west.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

You need 72 hour prior notice for any self propelled equipment crossing into canada. Each port has its own number you can call - if crossing from buffalo you can only cross at queenston - you must submit your paperwork to us customs at your port of entry and then only cross at that port.

I do not mean to confuse you,

I agree with brwnee.

I beleive your skid steer will need the 72 hours, as it most likely will be plated to drive on the roads around your construction site.

We just moved a Bobcat Zoomboom across with no issues whatsoever and no pre-notice. Sent the Custom Doc's to the Custom Broker on Monday and it crossed yesterday. First time and possibly last time moving something like that but I must say it was a lot easier than I thought.

thats what I said, prenotice for West destinations only...

I am pretty sure plated or not - if you dont walk behind it and push it you need prior notice. I learned this the hardway - by having a driver sit at the border for 3 days waiting for U.S. customs to run a check on the s/n - I would call U.S. customs and be sure - the other thing you sometimes run into with equipment - if it's used it must be washed before crossing into Canada - especially agriculture equipment. Even if the equipment will never have a title you still need to report to U.S. customs - not sure what the penalty is for not doing so and don't want find out. We move a lot of equipment across the border and that is the first thing we do now - make sure the customer has presented the paperwork to U.S. customs before we even assign a driver.

ALSO JUST WANTED TO POINT OUT - THE PRIOR NOTICE IS NOT FOR CANADA CUSTOMS PURPOSES - IT IS FOR US CUSTOMS - YOU DONT NEED THE PRIOR NOTICE IN CANADA - SO YOU COULD BLAST RIGHT BY US CUSTOMS - BUT IF YOU GET THE WRONG GUY AT CANADA CUSTOMS AND HE DOES NOT SEE THE US CUSTOMS STAMP - HE IS SURELY GOING TO TURN HIM AROUND HERE IS A LINK TO LEGAL MUMBO JUMBO Exporting a Motor Vehicle - CBP.gov

Thanks to all and I just got off the phone with the border and it is for US customs and you do need it for anything that is self propelled.

It sounds like weekends do not count so I need to send over the docs in the morning so that I can have a carrier bring it across Mon afternoon.

72 hrs vehicle- here we go again

today we arrived at US Customs to find the notorised manufaturers certificate of origin wasn't acceptable due to the fact that the serial # from Caterpillar only showed 10 digits and needed the preceeding 7 digits which are the model number need to be listed on the certificate. Thus we were rejected, and needed to start the 72 hrs all over again. The Customs officers in the vehicle export department are all on power trips, they don't have any sense of providing a service, they won't answer there phone, only leave a message and we will get back to you, can't call you when they do receive notice of your pre-arrival to say you may be lacking in information or whatever they might find wrong. The system is just wrong. Is there some way this sytem can be changed!!!
Just love billing all the extra detention charges, keeps my customers happy!!!

I posted about the 72 hours a while back (do a thread search) for a different reason. My "bitch" was about the fact that you HAVE to cross at the port the 72 hours was submitted. That is so stupid. Grrrr....

On this issue about 72 hours notification, it's pretty basic. ANY USED MACHINE that has an engine (Diesel or gas) must file for 72 hours. New machines DO NOT NEED a notice since they are being shipped from the manufacturer or distribution center.

Seems pretty complicated

Over the last few years we have brought back lots of bobcats , loaders , tractors and innumerable forklifts , in many forms. All of these are self propelled and less than half the time do we need to go to export control.

Especially the fork lifts, most of those electric ones come straight through.

Again some are older and come from auctions or equipment dealer and some come straight from the manufacturers.

If the customer tells us that there is a prior notice we abide by it , if not then we go straight to Canada customs.

Once we even had to leave the trailer at Canada Customs because they brought our trailer in for inspection for another ltl shipment and discovered some mud on small shovels tracks. Agriculture Canada forbade entry.

We had to remove the unit from the trailer and pressure wash it at the Peterbilt dealer (they have an earthen ramp just for this purpose) and then re load.
All the little critters we washed off had to cross the 100 yards to the Canadian border illegally on foot!!!

As I got told at Queenston/Lewiston every port (Detriot and Port Huron) have their own rules. All self propelled vehicles require 72 hour notice (even new MB Moose). with ownership, or bill of sale notorized. 5 Mins fron Lewiston is a bank that will do it for $5.00 ths is from experience. Detroit is very lax and has better hours than their Northern port. I hope this helps.
