actually the TPMS sensor is good not only for before & after but during. I highly doubt the driver would randomly stop to check pressure, whereas if the sensor goes off once a tire has a lower pressure reading during the trip you could save fuel by fixing the issue asap & also save money by not blowing tires.
TPMS is good but passive system whereas TPIS or tire pressure inflation systems is an active system that keeps tires at their set pressure constantly even when punctured (you here air getting out). You can see how it works here: Hendrickson - TIREMAAX - Tire Inflation System
