Elon Musk.......love this policy!

This seems great but the issue is that there are many decisions that need to be made by management as they generally have the experience and knowhow that would avoid any potential downfalls when making any sort of business changes. This would also create some tension between management that would not be in the loop on business process adjustments. Particularly in cross departmental situations. I like the idea of this but not sure it would be effective in all industries and situations.

Not a great idea.. there's a reason why large organizations like the military have a clear chain of command. Yes, it may slow things up a bit, but the alternative could be much worse.. And a "free for all let's ask anyone" mindset would likely result in alot of the top people getting bogged down in the everday minutiae of running the business by compromising the delegation process. ..i.e should we add another coffee pot in the break room? I dunno let's ask Elon..

I have to disagree. I believe that there are some very good results to be had by empowering your employees, including their ability to solve problems collectively. A company that restricts the decision making process to a handful of managers, will only be as good as that handful. I would be the first to agree that not every employee will respond positively, some people just aren't equipped to handle the additional freedom a "Musk" style affords them. However, from my own experience with our staff, allowing them to solve problems amongst themselves and having them realize that we are all in that "small boat rowing together in the same direction", has proven successful.

From my own experience from "previous life"..
Everyone who worked in a department I was leading, have a full knowledge of everything.
My rule was :
You (staff) and me are all equally good.
I'm the one who is responsible for all of it..
Noone ever hide anything or did anything behind someone back.
Thing were rolling..
Atmosphere was good.
Talking about Dispatching and planning department at manufacturing plant.
My two cents, eh..

His policy will leave people working at cross purposes and will result in needless duplication, missed opportunities and general all ' round confusion. He's not the first to come up with that.. its been tried. In any organization involving more than a couple of people there has to be a clear chain of command along with duties and responsibilities spelled out clearly for each individual. Otherwise what you end up with is alot of chaos and frustration..

Freightbroker, I do agree if it is a large firm. All large companies have to have rules, policies and procedures in place and those are all designed for the lowest functioning employees. Most people already understand that they should report to work at their assigned time, not steal company property and treat their fellow workers in a civilized manner. Rules like that aren't made for those employees. They already "get it". I have had the benefit of employing a small number of people, many with me for over 15 years. From the start I have encouraged them to think independently and trust their instincts. In my case you could say that I was lucky to get this type of employee, but I believe our success has been the result of the environment I provided and the encouragement we offered.

You're missing the point.
The point is anyone should be able to talk to anyone to facilitate the solution of a problem as quickly as possible, not to task workloads, or organize production schedules.
