I quoted a customer (not a 3pl) $2700.00 for a couple of loads from Emonton to Toronto via rail. He told me he had a rate of $2200.00 over the road. He wanted me to match.
I told him that for the rate there was a good chance that his freight would be probably end up being "all over the road somewhere between here and there.

So that one may not be impossible ... many carriers deadhead a lot out of there. $2700 is actually way higher than what is normal for EDM-YYZ on intermodal too. You wouldn't believe how little some customers are paying for it.

Same old story.. freight going west pays good i.e. $7000.00 and up for a truckload.. freight coming back pays $2500.00 and up. It's not hard to get a truck for Alberta outbound. Just post your load with any idiotic rate and your phone will ring continuously until you take that load down again.

I cold call numerous companies everyday and a lot of them are super cheap. I just leave it at that and walk away.

If you got the rate to go out there ....
At my old place, we'd send intermodal containers to Calgary/Edmonton and after unloading most would sit in storage for months until CN or CP decided they needed them somewhere and they would reposition for free. Otherwise repositioning empty costs about the same as moving one loaded. We ended up stopping to send our dry boxes out there and used rail owned or CT boxes instead ... ran our boxes on BC. The rates from BC are not so good either, but at least you could turn them pretty quickly. Much better to run reefers on those lanes in my opinion, regardless of mode ...

Yes, you are right - this will always happen in this industry. Obviously none of us are accepting these ridiculous rates and are walking away. That is why we choose to complain about it in the "moan and groan" section. We want to complain about it. It's comforting to know you are not the only one having difficulty. Also, it's an 11 page thread because misery loves company. lol
