Vermani Trucking

We recently gave them a load and they had done the same to us.. Held the freight hostage and demanded to be paid an extra $650 on the shipment for three extra stops that were within a 25 mile radius of each other. When we refused, they tried back soliciting for payment and stating that we weren't going to pay.. Stay FAR FAR away from these guys. I just wish I had checked this thread before assigning them the load.

1. three EXTRA stops - not negotiated prior to pick up .... should have been negotiated AT pick up from shipper - you would have known then - before the truck got off the dock
2. within 25 mile radius means nothing if the next receiver closes and now my driver has to sit an extra day to make two deliveries
3. how long was the wait time at each location?
4. was driver assist involved?

So without detailed info $650 means nothing - need more info

Not defending the carrier - there are ways to handle it unexpected situations - happens all the time in trucking

Nope, we weren't aware that there were extra stops but the reasonable thing to do wouldn't be to charge a ridiculous upcharge and expect your broker to pay up.

Driver was offloaded within 5-10mins at each stop once we convinced them to go for delivery since they already finished 1 delivery and were waiting to receive payment before delivering the other 3.

5-10mins at each stop there were just a couple skids.

No driver assist whatsoever.

It was a same day local flatbed move that normally runs without a hitch but because we decided to try out this carrier it almost cost us a customer.

thank you - yes if this is the case - I would definitely ask for the breakdown of the charges

This rate is not totally out of line depending on the circumstances. That truck potentially lost revenue for a whole day because of this surprise. They also may have customers to service that are important to them?

We offered $100 a stop at first and got up to $150 a stop or $450 total on top but they didn't allow for any negotiation.

Obviously it's understandable if there's other work planned for the driver, we would've offered to even have the shipper offload the truck but it was like they saw the opportunity for a cash grab and took it. If we had said we weren't willing to pay or nowhere near the mark on the charges then i'd understand for holding freight until payment but that wasn't the case. They had resorted straight to holding the freight hostage without negotiation.

What did you want to pay for the extra three drops? What is fair in your eyes?

I would say $450.00 for the extra drops are more than reasonable.

They are having a slow week and trying to make up for other losses, I see it every day, carrier wanted 1800.00 from Miss to Windsor, 2300.00 Miss to Chicago, 950.00 Miss to Kingston...

Well you can't get it if you don't ask for it I guess.

Morley Black's voice in my head with that since he said that to me on a sales trip with him many moons ago. I've never been offended with a rate from a carrier since, if I asked what their rate was(even last couple of years) and they go big why be offended.

"If you don't ask for big rates how will you ever get them!"

From a carrier, 5-10 minutes a stop is IMPOSSIBLE,

it takes time for the driver to arrive, check in, open doors, back in, wait for the skids to be removed, paperwork signed, pull out to close the doors, continue to next location,

the time frame doesn't work,

if you have drivers that are making drops in 5 minutes, please let me know ill hire them for city work!

also how is it a complete unknown even after loading about these extra stops, was the driver not given paperwork,,,

even if its not cross border, on his bol it states ONE drop, then the customer decides at the ONE planned drop he wants to branch it into 3 drops,

something doesn't add up...

I dunno, you keep saying $650 is a ridiculous upcharge. Lets examine this. -

How much extra did you charge your customer?

I'll take a guess and say it was more than $450. Lets say $550 for arguments sake.

You are saying that $100 is the amount that takes it from completely reasonable to ridiculous?

If you didn't upcharge your customer for adding 3 drops, then I go back to thinking you were simply trying to be sneaky and hoping the carrier would just accept the extra drops since they were already loaded.

This was a flatbed shipment and the skids were just taken off the side. Driver would just pull up, skids would come right off and driver would be on his way after ppwk was signed. All in all, the 4 drops took around 2 hours to complete, which includes the hour or so wasted by carrier waiting for payment.

even if its a flat bed, unless they were outside, already waiting for the driver to arrive, he pulled in they instantly took of those "few skids" and had copies of the bol that they ran and gave to him while he was in his truck looking up the next address its not realistic, AT ALL,

flat beds still secure the skids do they not, the time line just does not add up,

also it still doesn't answer the question of paperwork,

but for arguments sake,

4 drops, 25 mile radius, 2 hours,

subtract an hour,

1 hour, 3 drops, 25 mile radius between them,

0 percent chance
