What is the difference between a 40 000 lb rear end and a 46 ooo lb rear end?

Ken ,the primary difference is the axles, hubs, crown and pinions and carriers are all heavier thus stronger and more durable.

Thank you. That answers my question. There really should be a forum just for technical questions such as this.

Difference in rear ends

The 40,000lbs rear ends are simply two 20,000lbs differentials - the 46000lbs rears are then two 23000lbs differentials.
Two issues differentiate the two:
1) Weight - the bigger the diff. the stronger and heavier it is.
2) Gear ratios - the bigger differntials generally run higher numeric ratios in order to produce more power. These higher ratios increase your engine speed (RPM) at an equivalent road speed.

*** note : any differeintial can have any ratio ***

For general highway use throughout THE USA and Canada, you should stick to 38,000 or 40,000lb rear ends, they are designed to get the job done, if you are hauling 89,000lbs gross in Canada which is over what you are require to haul the maximum 80000lbs gross in the USA.
The lighter rears and other matching components in the driveline are strong enough and much lighter allowing you to maximise your payload.

the 46000lbs rears are usually specked for heavy haul, such as for pulling by trains with gross weights up to 145000lbs. They are also used for construction equipment and a favorite in the logging industry.

An example would be the same 450 hp engine matched to a 13 speed transmission with 3.67 ratios will be turning at 1300 rpm at 60mph.
the same engine with a differential running 4.11's will be running 1500rpm at 60mph.
It will cost you in fuel to run your engine 200rpm faster to get the same job done.

Generally the bigger diferrentials will run the higher ratio's.
