I was wondering if I can get some comments on the use of websites in our industry, who you use for web hosting and where you think its going. (to see if its worth spending on)

I mainly use google for searches and to get the contact information so I can call them. Most websites now a days are fairly static but use some web development language to make it 'spiffy'.

I was calling around to web developers and it is really confusing now a days. Gone are the days you get a domain for $20 for 20 years and make a quick webpage on notepad and throw it out there. Now you have to have a bunch of stuff embedded in there somewhere to get higher google ranks and such.

Does anyone host their own websites inhouse?

I'd like to hear your comments.....

Ours is a work in progress but we are doing it ourselves, as far as rankings go we have big 53' rolling billboards all over North America advertising so we are not worried about rankings. I always ask when you hear about a company, the first thing you do is look them up on the internet so I personally think a website is worth the money we are lucky that we have a girl doing ours in house who is fantastic.

We are going through a website change to make it more dynamic to integrate data from customer input and inquiries into our sales CRM software and our TMS software. We are looking at developing this ourselves through Wordpress. Wordpress is an app that allows non-technical people to build their own website through drag an drop functionality. The back end is handled by the software to ensure you are Google and search engine compliant.

We run two websites, one traditional and static, and the other a hosted Wordpress site that we update frequently.

ours is a custom made wordpress managed site, hosted on godaddy, easy, simple, cost effective, almost never goes down. every month I get a report, it's always over 99% up time.

Registering the domain name is simple but it is something you'll want to do yourself through godaddy.com
I remember a fairly prominent company having their website down for a few weeks back in the 90's because when they originally registered the domain name, they had the general manager handle all that and it was registered with him as being the legal owner and contact.
Well fast forward to a domain renewal time and said GM who is no longer employed and having left on bad terms he refused to cooperate..

It took a couple of weeks with lawyers involved to have the domain name legally transferred into the company's own name with the company owner now in control.

Bottom line is, when registering your company's domain name, do it yourself first and simply 'park' the domain name until you have the website designed and then forward it to the webhost's nameservers. Registering the domain name is not something you relegate to a 3rd party such as a web designer or webhost or an employee to do. Those relationships often end.

I agree with snafu, we just recently took control of all the domain name registrations, we've been lucky with using the same web people for the past 20+ years so they were fine with transferring it to our control.

Hey Jim,

I'm a web developer. I was in the transportation industry for the last 12 years. I was the GM of a freight brokerage. We tried everything to increase sales, mailers, trade shows, telemarketing, advertising, whatever you can think of. When I discovered web marketing instead of getting 1 lead a year from our website we were getting 3-4 / day and our traffic rose from 30-40 hits a month to over 3000. It worked so well, I left to start my own business to get the word out on how businesses like yours can use the internet to grow their businesses.

I'm local here in Mississauga if you'd like to meet to discuss. PS - I also offer web hosting and can explain to you the differences.
