US Tariffs

Interesting that there are some folks who mistakenly think that the recent US tariffs are somehow a “good” thing. This, in spite of near unanimous agreement by the most respected economists both here in North America and around the world, that they will plunge the global economy into a recession, cause wide spread disruption to global trade, increased inflation, and on a strictly personal note, the devastating erosion of my hard earned retirement funds. Thinking that Trump is merely administering some bad tasting medicine, or applying some kind of tough love economics lesson is extremely naive and dangerously misguided. In spite of what some might think about the current state of affairs here in Canada, the last thing we need are ruinous tariffs instituted by a man with no absolutely knowledge whatsoever of global economics.

Whether or not they end up working in America's favor is to be seen.
He's not the president of the "global economy".

Completely agree with this take.

The best example of how ridiculous the tariffs are is Vietnam. Nike has 130 shoe plants in Vietnam, you think they are going to "bring those back to America?"

can they also traffif the call centers - services .. let's petition to get Livingston have a north american base ... there are so many layers to this

Even little heard of Heard Island got a 10% tariff... human population: 0 penguin population: too many to count. Import/exports: 0 GDP: 0

Further assurance, I guess, that this thing has been carefully planned and thought out.

The year is 2027...Donald Trumps tariffs have been a massive success...the average American now works in a manufacturing facility making $8/HR (paid out in trumpcoin)...the Canadian Dairy Cartel has agreed to stop treating American dairy farmers nastily and started allowing 750ML of Chlorine per Litre of Milk...the entire island of Taiwan has been flown into America to run the factories

If there was ever a time to strike (other than 10 years ago) against Driver Inc - it's now. One would think, if cross border volume reduces - that its going to become even more of a bloodbath domestically as we adjust. Ol' Johnny Fair Wage, who sure - competed against those sorts of carriers cross border, is now going to run domestic against Harrys House Terminal Carriers.

If tariffs are so bad for the economy, why does every country in the world utilize them?
I think only orange man haters, and countries that are going to be exposed as economic failures (Hi, Canada!) are getting butt hurt about this. I'm not a fan of the new tariffs but only because I know how bad the government has made it here and we'll see the results soon.
Every country uses them in some form and has for ages. But the key thing is, they’ve been slowly baked into those economies over decades. You can’t just throw on massive, sudden tariffs out of nowhere and expect things to magically balance out. There has to be a plan, or it just turns into chaos like whats happening now,

That’s why in some of these high-tariff countries, you can’t even buy a base model Audi for less than the equivalent of $120K CAD. The costs get passed right down to the consumer ,always. So unless you’re loaded, you’re going to be stuck driving something like an F-1Shitty and eating hot dogs for dinner. Not everyone wants that life just because “mUh pRoTeCtIoNisM.”

It's not about hating Trump or loving Canada ,it’s about how this stuff actually hits real people the ones that dont have the luxury to play golf with their buddies on a week-day or the low income parents struggling to scrape by, especially when the economy’s already struggling. People are just recovering from the Covid impacts of inflation and job loss.

Our newest hurdle we had to overcome: the importer of record did not have enough credit at the broker to fulfill the tariff/duties and transaction fee so the load had to wait until paid. Formerly a couple thousand credit limit was all that was needed and now everyone has to negotiate a higher credit limit or pre-pay.

If the goal of President Trump is to incentivize businesses to return to the United States then the smart thing to do would be to put together a five or ten year plan with the threat of tariffs at the tail end of it.. i.e. "we will give you five to ten years to bring your plants back to the United States, and if you don't THEN tariffs will apply to imports". Instead he's shocked the economy.. everyone is scrambling.. The tariffs are only a small part of it.. the bigger issue is that no one has time to adjust.. there's no way to avoid the tariffs as no one can transfer their production to the US in a day, week, month or even one year. Moving plants and reconfiguring supply chains is a multi year undertaking. Why mete out punishment in the form of tariffs at the get go? Even the nimblest and quickest to respond are going to be hurt. This is complete incompetence, nonsense, and lack of care on an industrial scale, the likes of which we've never seen before.

That's not fast enough... Time is not on Trump's side...

In 10 years he will be shitting in a diaper and his hands will have become so frozen, he will be unable to manipulate utensils and will be dependent on cub scouts to feed him...

Haahahahaa...

Once he wipes the stock market, those finance bros are going to need jobs so maybe this plan might not be bad at all. Wipe out the economy so you have workers for all those factories you're bringing back to the US.

What really doesn’t add up is that nearly every major warehouse we go to is already understaffed. Constant delays, always the same excuse: not enough workers. So how exactly are they going to support a massive return of manufacturing when they can’t even fully staff whats already there.

Client of ours opened a warehouse in Ohio and is having a hell of a time staffing it, i guess not as many people want to work low skill low wage jobs anymore.

Plus he is deporting all of the foreign workers who are the only ones who will actually get up in the morning and go to work for minimum wage.

Running into the same situation with our customers plant in CA.

They can find skilled workers to run the machines but low level staff to load trucks, nada.

Once he wipes the stock market,
IMHO ... that's about as close as anyone has come to the real truth. Does anyone really believe that Trump actually gives a shit about anyone other than himself and those he owes money to?
Dollars to donuts says he is personally sitting on a mountain of cash. Break the economy, drop the stock market like a stone, jump in with cash when it hits rock bottom, and come out the other side a trillionaire.

Just for fun ... my version of the Carney/Trump phone call.

5 minutes before the official call, Carney whips out his trusty cell phone and call Trump's cellie ...
Mark: Don, it's me, Mark Carney.
Don: I'm gonna hit you guys so bad with tariffs ...
Mark: Don, I hate to interrupt you but, you know Ghislaine is a personal friend, right?
Don:
Mark: You know they took pictures of everything , right?
Don: :eek::eek::eek:
Mark: I'll call you on the official phone in a minute.

(Trust me, I'm no Liberal fan)

Carney: Hello Mr. President, this is Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada
Trump: Who?
Carney: Mark Carney, the new Prime Minister of Canada
Trump: I've done more in my first 100 days as president than any other president ever has. We're getting more done.. you know..than ever before.. they call it "Trump Speed".
Carney: Yes, well, I'd like to discuss a broad range of issues with you, including trade, the border, tariffs as well as national defence.
Trump: No president has done more for the United States than I have. We're getting rid of illegal immigrants, we're clamping down on the drug lords, we're implement tariffs because the whole world has been ripping us off.. and you know.. that's got to stop.
Carney: The USMCA is up for renewal.. let's commit to getting that done sooner than later.. perhaps that would be a good place to start.
Trump: The American people finally have a president who gets things done. You should see the crowds, Mike. I mean.. they're the biggest crowds you've ever seen.. the biggest! And folks come from all over.. there's never been anything like it.
Carney. Yes.. well.. let's agree to meet and get our teams working on renegotiating the USMCA then. I look forward to working with you and to building on our close longstanding relationship.
Trump. ok Mike..

Now that the U.S. and China are locked in a full-blown trade war, it'll be interesting to see how things play out. I wonder if Americans will start heading up to Canada to buy Chinese or other foreign goods, then just bring them back across the land border. Could get really interesting depending on how strict customs gets.
