Yesterday we had a guy jacknife near Sherbrooke Pq, the truck and empty trailer was on some grass and was upright. It was winched back onto the highway and both units were towed 10km to a towing yard incredibly the, towing bill was $18,000 The whole shebang took 3 hours from the time of the phone call until the truck and trailer arrived at the tow yard. I tried to get the equipment out yesterday and move it to a repair shop......the tow company was too busy to make the invoice until 11am today. At 11am they announce they wont accept any form of payment other than credit card in hand at their compound. We tried EFT, they wont do it..........they want the weekends storage which will add another $1,000. We had another tow company there to pick up the equipment because everyone on the planet accepts EFT's but they wont release the equipment until someone shows up with a credit card. Please tell me the towing business will soon be regulated.....

Please post the Towing Co. name once you get this all sorted out please....these guys need to be brought to justice for their highway robbery...at least then they wont be anyone's first call that is on here! Hopefully this will be the last $18-19k to these scammers...!

There must be an association or business group you can escalate this with, no?!

No escalation just legal criminals, the police don't care who charges how much first on scene gets it even if you have your own tow truck 15 minutes away.

You’re lucky they didn’t say...”cash only”.

Gord, welcome to the tow truck industry - especially in Quebec. We had a similar problem a couple years ago and I found no solution either. There is no regulation for commercial vehicles and no options - if the police call a unit then they will get paid whatever they want. The only thing I can recommend is that you ask the towing company that you hired to pick up the unit pay the originating tow company and you work it out with them. But becareful, sometimes they work together and it benefits you, other times the two of them rook you further.

I would imagine that you will experience the same issue with your truck on Foldens Road in Ingersoll this morning (Sunday) .

The tow company wont release any piece of equipment until the whole bill is paid. This isn't new in trucking I had a similar situation on the 400 North just south of the Canal Road exit and I went to the site when the OPP called when our truck rolled over into a ditch.... as its only 40 minutes from Brampton. A load of racking mostly headed to Vancouver took 8 guys two hours to move the load from one trailer to another, then two tow trucks winched the truck and trailer back to rubber side down. The bill was $32,000 and that was 15 years ago. Two tow trucks and 8 laborers for 5 hours....$32,000 That was Abrahms Towing, we are in the wrong business...the OPP called Abrahms so what recourse do you have? We were refunded everything except our deductible but the cause of insurance rates going up is tow companies more than any other reason.
