Ladies & Gentlemen,

Just for curiosity and for my own sanity... What is the going rate for a 53' intermodal load. Dock to Dock.
We are trying to figure our a way to lower some costs for a BC distribution project. I reached out to VanKam to get local cartage rates for BC, however my staff here, are quoting some seemly high numbers for linehaul to BC via intermodal.

Just looking for a sanity check.... anyone care to share some numbers?

Thanks in advance.

Theman,

under $4000 including fuel or plus fuel?

I think our crew quoted intermodal with QuikTrax as individual shipments to the following locations, we have been asked by our client to revise our pricing as they have found a more cost effective option. We've been doing this distribution for a few years now and we look ideally would not like to lose this regular work.

I've advised our staff to reach out to Van Kam for last mile delivery, however I'm being told that intermodal rates from Toronto to Vancouver are $4000-$4500... which I think is high....

Any genius around that can outsmart our staff on a way to get this done?

Martinetav,

Our fleet of trucks is license for Ontario only, we are a regional carrier. I personally was expecting to see a rate of <$4000 including fuel for a intermodal move Toronto to Vancouver, and the local delivery in BC as a separate cost.

Our team had obtained a cost of ~$6471 for the below distribution, based on using a QuikTrax solution each shipment booked individually from pickup to delivery.

After adding our margin, our client says our rate is too high......

hence why I'm looking into alternatives like line-hauling the whole project to BC and shipping using a regional carrier in BC. We had received pricing of $4400 + FSC for a intermodal line haul which I think is high, and the man agrees that the line-haul portion should be sub $4000.

We use Bison, they have great pricing and our next is Trans X both can offer final delivery also. Bison will do FTL + stops.

Sorry for my delayed response. The linehaul should be at around $4000 but probably less including fuel. But you're showing all of these final destinations for delivery which are not even Metro Vancouver. An intermodal dray carrier is not going to do this.

What I would do is route the shipment to Vancouver to a regional carrier's dock for distribution. I know that I've used Comox in the past for this type of thing and was happy with them.

Give it to someone like M-O and have it quoted LTL from Toronto. Let them do the whole shooting match. They will take care of the linehaul and last mile delivery. No point in screwing around with one carrier for intermodal and then another for last mile. When something goes wrong they point at each other and you're left to fix it. M-O rates are very good.. especially for this light skid lot stuff.
