Strike

A general strike has been proposed so frequently that it makes my head spin. Each time my drivers come to me to tell me they want to participate and almost nothing materializes I ask them where they get their information.
The fact is that the trucking industry will never get to a point of a general strike. The whole industry is too broad and far reaching and can never agree on anything. There are way too many independents and owner operators in the business that cannot afford even a week of downtime. Too many carriers are driven by debt and the next payment is always coming up - they'll run for less but not stop. On the other hand some carriers and some specialized segments are enjoying really good margins to stop.

This strike is supposed to run from Wednesday to Sunday - quite convenient excuse to stay home for the US Thanksgiving holiday.

Oh, have I ever got a bunch of drivers who live off their parrot Bluetooth Madonna mikes. The dispatchers are just amazed at how the driver can dispatch themselves. All one has to say is 'go to the customers drop yard' and the driver will say, 'and pick up trailer XXX - the one that Driver1 dropped last week and pick up the load that wasn't ready earlier today that Driver2 attempted to pickup?'. They are all connected to each and all know immediately when something doesn't go someones way. On the good side, you don't need to give turn by turn directions to any of them any more because someone on their phone network will know how to get in there.....

If there is anything in the rumor pipeline they'll all know about it within 20 minutes.

We have a coconut telegraph here as well. Tell one to tell all..

This topic got me taking a trip down memory lane. In the “old days“ , most drivers had a choice of listening to AM radio, a few lucky ones had FM radio, perhaps a tape cassette, or the chatter on the CB to pass the time while driving. Now, with satellite radio, podcasts, and a host of other devices, drivers have access to so much more information, hopefully using it to expand their horizons and knowledge. Maybe.

What amazes me is the weather/road / border waiting times updates - more accurate than official sources
