Starship Logistics

Our payments from Starship are received in a timely manner. Whenever I email A/P - I always receive a reply with full details and cheque numbers.

And cheque dates noted - are when the payment is in fact mailed - received a couple days later.

No issues with Starship on my end. I wish I received the same reply, full details and committed dates from other brokers. At times I wait for days for a simple return email....

Why are you people taking up your private business issues in a public forum? Have a little respect for the man you are dealing with and do him the courtesy of a telephone call.
And AccountsReceivable@DRC, as moderator, why are you letting this thread get out of hand like that? It should have been closed as soon as someone posted a cheque number.

Just my humble 2 cents worth.

Michael Ludwig,

The thread did not get "out of hand" as you noted. I can assure you - it was monitored carefully. No words from any member warranted a "closing off" of the thread - but a reply - on a more positive note - was indeed necessary. Therefore I provided a honest one...a personal account of my dealings with Starship. And I know there are many other positive remarks about Starship out there also - whether members choose to write about them or not.

Personal messages outside of the forum were exchanged and the matter is considered closed. If anything had escalated beyond what was previously written - a closing off of the thread isn't all that would have occurred.

Thank you for your post...and 2 cents....

I find this thread very interesting. When a company turns into a 90 day plus payer they are basically crucified on here. But Starship being a 90 plus day payer I almost have to give some of you some alone time with Mike Jr so you can cuddle. We have done business with Starship and yes we have been paid in the 90 day trend. Do I agree with it - of course not - everybody likes their money in ample time. So if you happen to be a moderator on this site it is ok to be one of these companies that drag their feet paying their bills.

These are my thoughts only and nothing personal against Mike Jr.

I think what is happening is that everyone here knows that Starship pays their bills. There is no question you will get paid. If your business isn't able to or even doesn't want to accept anything other than 30 days, then either speak with them when you book the load or politely decline the load. Everyone's business model is different. We do the odd load here and there for them a few times a year. I am happy to do the loads we are offered from them. If I want to keep my trucks moving with decent loads that go where I need to get a truck, then I am able/willing to be a bit flexible with the payment terms. There must be many other people besides me that can be a bit flexible or they wouldn't be able to cover their loads. But the long and the short of it is that this thread is getting REALLY redundant. I am really looking forward to burying it and move on. Any one else? All due respect to your opinion, Dave. Just giving a little personal opinion. Thanks!

I don't know Mike Jr, nor do I have more than limited knowledge of Starship Logistics. Any customer....... shipper, broker, whoever, can pay their bills however/whenever they want. That is their decision based on their own circumstances. It is entirely your decision, as a supplier, to accept those terms or not. Some will, some won't as evidenced by the responses we have seen here. If you enter into a business arrangement with a party that you know pays more slowly than others, don't complain when you're not paid in 30 days.

chica123 - you said exactly what I was going to note here. If you have to wait on being paid - and don't care to "wait" - don't do the load and move on then. We all choose who we do business with. Personally, if a company is upfront and honest regarding payment - as well as always available and answers the phone when you call - that is who I would rather do business with. Not a broker that waits 3-4 months to pay who never answers the phone, is never in the office nor returns any emails.

The industry just isn't what it once was...and there will always be good brokers...and bad ones....no getting around it.

Time to move onto other more "pressing" matters here folks....

It really boils down to the clients we have. If your mix of clients are slow payers then you will also be a slow payer. A very easy trap to fall into... Start making 100 sales calls a day for months straight with only one or two decent leads to show for it.. and suddenly your making all kinds of exceptions just to get the business. And the kicker.. the shitters (I can't really call them shippers).. get off the hook as the carriers blame the brokers. "We should haul for the shippers direct" as is often said. Well.. yeah.. but trust me there are some real asset based shits out there who have lots of bricks and mortar coming out of their asses yet who refuse to pay their bills in a timely manner.

Paying customers in terms makes things easier all around, if a supplier knows they don't have to chase for money you get treated a lot better and moved to the head of the line when there is an issue of any kind. You will also get carriers trucks faster than someone they have to chase for their money. I know it's tough if your customer does not honour terms but that should not become my problem as a carrier. This "I will pay you when I get paid" does not fly as I can find a lot of direct customers that want to take their time to pay and do not need a broker in the middle taking a cut. STARSHIP I have no issues with how you pay us and we will take a load from you any day of the week.

Freight Broker - well said, there are great shippers we all work with and then there is the much more challenging shipper that will hold $50k in receivables (illegally) because of a $5000 claim that they caused. By the time it goes through insurance and they get $0.25 on the $1 they asked for they slow pay the $50k too out of spite. Oh, and the carriers on those orders were long ago paid because they must be.

lowmiler88 - thanks, happy to hear it. :)

Keep well,
Mike

Oh a post about my employer when I was out of town for a week, sweet.

During Covid, we layed off zero employees, we had two employees request short term leave to care for their children. Despite ups and downs this year we are doing pretty well I feel. I wish I worked in accounting, or had some percentage of ownership (I don't) so I could actually look at the books and tell you my opinion of what hapens 'down the hall'. I do know we move over 99.5% of the orders called in (I track that myself), so there is plenty of carriers that are willing to work with us on whatever terms that they are getting (not everyone is 90 days I would hope!). I get seldome if ever calls about accounting issues and people seem generally nice when I speak to them on any topic including service issues, claims or even to call to report a driver went over and above at a customer and the customer asked us to relay that to the carrier.
Anyway, thanks Trans for ressurecting this old thread, sorry working with us was not a positive experience for you.

Keep well,
Mike

Hey Mike,

Poster removed their comments, perhaps they understood it was a stale thread. Anyway, besides May we're having a decent year here despite all the craziness 2020 has thrown the world. Hoping you are well sir!

Mike

Howdy folks,

So I'm sure you recall from my other thread, that I'm taking approx 2 months off to pack, move and spend Christmas with the fam. I may or may not be employed after this leave of absence, I'll let you know how that works out. This Friday will be my last day in the office so speak now if you need anything from me, or forever hold your peace.

Further, should you be on a call with Sandi Proach, she is retiring this week, her last day is this Friday October 30th. There will be cake Thursday, but don't tell her as she doesn't know. She's been here as long as I have and she's been an amazing asset to our team.

Lastly, we have a new dispatcher who started this week. Please welcome Jeff Bartlett who is on his second day. Pleasant and smart guy, he will be taking over Sandi's outbound territory. He's currently sitting next to Albert at ext 225 but will be at Sandi's desk effective next week.

I hope you are all safe, healthy and doing well,
Mike
