speed limiters

A contact at the MTO told me that as of this week they only have one portable computer to check and most enforcement officers have not been trained yet. Until they get up to speed (no pun intended) the computer they have will be used only to check trucks that have been involved in serious accidents.
Typical gov't nonsence. I am all in favour of trucks slowing down but come on now, we already have a law in place. It is called speeding.
Why have thousands of trucks spend time and money trying to be compliant when all they have to do is give tickets to anyone going over 100 kph. It is the same as the cell phone law, again we have a law in place. It is called careless driving. Charge the clowns that can't walk and chew gum at the same time and leave the rest of us alone!!
Friday rant now complete.
Thank you.

Just a heads up. We have had problems with Mercedes engines having errors on thier readers. MTO is aware of the problem and yet they have given some of our drivers a hard time saying it is the drivers problem not the MTO's. OTA has assured us we should have no problems due to this issue that is not yet resolved. Still does not solve the problem of unhappy drivers going below the speed limit through several U.S. states....but the law is the law right.

What a joke this is. I do see the merit in the idea, but unless it is adopted by the US it will put Canadian drivers at risk on some American higways. The government dollar at work...

Drivers at risk you sound like a broker that is the biggest myth in the world. If this law eliminates even 20 percent of the trucks coming to Ontario that alone is worth it. No truck needs to go over 65 we have been speed limited for over 5 years and no one has come close to hitting us and the fuel savings are great.

I have heard many a driver complaint. I have also taken calls from people complaing about the speed of the truck. I do realize that the savings are great. I just don't foresee the MTO turning trucks away at the borders...

Once the MTO see's the source of revenue it will generate for them they will hop on board like no tomorrow.

I have been almost hit on 3 occasions by trucks IN the US all in states that have 70+ mph speed limits. I listen to the complaints on the CB. I watch as the 4 wheelers give me the finger as they speed by after having to slow down to 65 in 70+ states when I am trying to pass a 62mph or 63mph truck. I never pass unless there is a clear mile+ behind me of no traffic .. but they always catch me before I can get by. This also happens in Canada. I won my truck. I have run it for 5 years. The gear ratio pretty much keeps my mileage consistant, I have to run 60mph to get any fuel savings. 63 to 70 mph is so minimal in change that it does me no good being limited to 65. I lose 30 miles a day of running. $150 a week/ $7000 g's per year. I wont save that with my setup.

Worse is I have watch in the last 30 days OPP drive behind trucks that are obvioulsy not governed and done nothing. Apparently the rule doesnt apply to everyone everywhere. Just when they want to enforce it.

I actually followed 2 trucks for 28 kilometers before the "fastest" one managed to get by the slower one. The slower one could have eased up on the pedal just a tad & made everything a lot easier.

Faey you should call the companies involved if that was one of our trucks we would have spoke to the driver involved. We instruct all of drivers not to hold up traffic, not to block a lane of traffic to run in and get a coffee etc etc. We pay our drivers as professionals and that is not being a proffesional.

I hear you Lowmiler, but sometimes it's hard to call the companies involved when there are no decals on the back doors. I've also had the brush off because I feel that they are thinking "oh some dizzy female that doesn't have a clue about how trucks work" :(

Actually, it's the OTA at Work!!... OTA have been pushing for speed limiters for some time, and they finally got their way. We can thank them for screwing us all!

Speed limiters are protectionism at its best... Not to mention cash grab.

We have quit altogether going into Ontario as well as tons of other companies that we have talked to. A friend of ours got caught just after they brought that in and was fined $200.00 and his company $5,000.

But ON companies can go anywhere they want... Hmmm....

Like someone else said, the laws we have in place for speeding, etc. are adequate and should be upheld.

Good luck with it.

See it is working just fine.......

We can't just go anywhere Manitoba... I have to get special insurance clearance for BC. But tonight I was passed by by a NY truck & believe me...... he didn't have no governer on!!!! Closely followed by a QC truck..... what the ....!!!! Makes me wonder who the heck is checking these peope?

This is a brain-dead, short sighted law....which seems to be to only ones coming out of Queen's park these days.
Just yesterday, east bound on the 401 by woodstock where the 403 splits, we have a gaggle cluster clump of trucks all squeegied together because we can only separate our speed by 1/2 mile/hour.

So, like a good trucker I'm in the right lane, approaching the spot where the right lane dissappears, and the 401 reduces to 2 lanes. Anywho, seeing this cluster around me, I put my signal on to merge left, 1 full kilometer before the lane ends. I got stuffed at the end of the lane by (get this) an OPP 3 ton pulling a patrol car on a trailer. The idiot sat there in line with my trailer axles.

Now If I could have hit the throttle and sped up for a bit...no problem. But, that would be unsafe, wouldn't it?

Don't know how true this is... but.... I was told the other day that if you have a CAT engine there is a "CAT rewards" programme. It allows you to go faster than the governed speed & is apparently undetectable by the authorities. The MTO officer I spoke to agreed it was true, but if they catch you speeding then you are screwed
