Someone got creative to get their money

No.. but a little bit of money is better than no money at all. I would rather get $50.00 for a six hour wait than nothing even though $50.00 is obviously way too low as well.
Problem with this philosophy (when the trucking market is obviously better than today) is that once you get burned like that, you probably will never go back to that shipper or receiver. Little by little, carriers get to know you, your shipper and receiver and will be less inclined to work for you down the road.....
If you constantly say to your driver you will not pay him/her for waiting time, you will lose your driver to someone else. I'm not talking about the "dime a dozen" variety of drivers. I'm talking about the good ones, that you value because they work hard and are responsible.

Customers who refuse to pay legitimate waiting time and fight tooth and nail against other accessorial charges are usually the same ones who nickel and dime you on every lane, jump suppliers for the smallest of savings and worst of all, drag their heels and look for every excuse when it comes time to pay the bills. Everyone has had one or two of these over the years and the best part about them is when they finally leave you to torment and torture someone else.

Yes, I know.. which is why I pay wait time even though I mostly don't get it from my shippers. Fortunately it doesn't come up often as my shippers who make it clear that they don't pay wait time/detention are also good about loading out promptly so it hasn't been an issue. I had a long chat with one of my shippers years ago about this: he had a crane break, and as a result my truck got stuck at his facility for about eight hours.. an exceptional circumstance. I asked my shipper for some wait time.. he declined, stating that he doesn't get a discount on his freight bill when a truck breaks down and is late for pickup/delivery. So I paid the truck for the wait time.. lost money on that load but made it back on the subsequent thousand loads that picked up on time.
