I DEAL WITH DEBBIE WHO IS APPARENTLY ONLY WORKING PART TIME RIGHT NOW.
I SENT AN EMAIL AND A FAX THAT THEIR ACCOUNT WAS ON HOLD FOR A JULY 1ST OVER DUE INVOICE AND WITHIN AN HOUR BOTH DEBBIE AND GAIL REPLIED BACK TO SAY THAT PAYMENT HAD BEEN MAILED. WE RECEIVED THAT ON THE 24TH.

That is just a load of crap, brokers have absolutely zero risk and in most cases only minimal employees.Yes deregulation had a major effect on rate and we were happy to have the opportunity to compete with the big guys on a somewhat even turf but deregulation of load brokers was not done to afford access to freight for small trucking companies. The deregulation of load brokers was response to the shipping lobby so that the shippers could anonymously drive down freight rates and switch carriers whenever it suited their use,
The absolute minimum that a broker should be required to carry is a 1 million dollar bond to protect the carrier from fly by night non payers,a carrier can not start to do business without insurance why should a load broker be exempt from the consequences of his actions.
I am sure that the bulk of load brokers ultimately pay their carriers but a great many abuse the terms of payment because they know most small trucking companies are too desperate for the freight to complain!
I am fully aware of the difficulty most small carriers face in securing backhaul freight when you have no real sales dept or even a solid knowledge of how to prospect in areas out of your general jurisdiction, but never the less it is time to stand up and force the government to regulate this segment.
No where in our industry is there more potential for fraud than load brokerage.
I have had it wioth running trucks so i am getting out but hey maybe I could get back some of the money I lost by opening as a freight broker. What the Hell 90 days of freight before I pay anybody......than maybe I,ll pay you.

Thank Goodness we have this website, so we can hopefully weed out all the bad load brokers and carriers over time. Until then, we should be thankful for each other, the carriers who provide the skilled drivers who carry the freight and the load brokers who provide the skilled sales forces to find find the freight.

Woodstock,

I think there is a little confusion over what brokers really do. Yes, we have lower overhead and less risk, but so do a million other companies in different industries. You chose to be a carrier, so it seems somewhat pointless saying how all brokers are bad because we chose to be in something which doesn't carry the same risk as you. I would assume most people would call that "smart business."

Fraud is by no means strictly related to brokers and transportation. Other industries deal with the same issues and by doing your due diligence; the problem should be minimal. Why not ask for references and make the calls to confirm they are correct.

De-regulation opened a lot of doors for carriers and obviously this was positive for you. Sounds a little one sided to me.

Being a broker, I pay all my invoices under 35 days from receipt. Better than most of your clients no doubt. I keep a low overhead and minimal employees to ensure that I can operate like this. Also, it sounds like you are very aware of the industry and in a previous post I read; its more carriers which are double brokering and not paying bills than brokers, so I would assume you would have no problem carrying the Million dollar bond yourself ? I mean, it wouldn't really tie up your money and cause extra work and time which could ultimately be done by checking who you are using before picking up their load.

I understand there are a number of bad brokers out there... probably the same number of bad carriers which back-solicit brokers and offer cheaper rates, don't read order instructions, arrive when ever they feel like it for deliveries, hold freight to get paid COD without any cause, have breakdowns every second hour of the day, .... I think you know where I am going with this. Time to let go my friend, brokers are not the devil !.... its' called business management and it's about time some ( and I mean some ).... take a course in it to protect themselves instead of blaming all us brokers... besides... we are the ones that spend countless hours sourcing freight in areas you would have previously backhauled empty from.

All on the same side.....
