There are a couple of different scenarios for this type of situation:
#1. Toronto to City X to Toronto = customer A to customer B; customer B back to customer A
#2. Toronto to City X then go to City Y back to Toronto (different customer) = customer A to customer B; customer C to customer D

Just wondering how all of you experienced folks have dealt with one or both of these scenarios when the return load is cancelled after the truck is already on its way to customer B for delivery.

Charge a miss pick and start looking unless it's a Friday then the fun begins.

After re-reading my post, I don't think I was specific enough.
What I meant was how do you determine what you charge for the first leg of the round trip when the return portion gets cancelled? i.e. do you divide the trip into two separate rates for each leg and have them both listed separately on the same rate confirmation, do you divide the whole rate in half, etc....
Assuming, of course that this round trip has been booked with only one customer/broker.
This happened to us one time in the past and we made the mistake of not specifically determining the rate for each leg. Our return load got cancelled and we ended up getting a really crappy payment for the first leg.
Hopefully I have clarified my question a little bit.....

Here is a warning for you. I have seen this happen before. Broker can't cover his load so he posts as a rounder, once the first portion is completed he says they cancelled the return however there never was a return.
Bill them for the whole thing, 2nd portion truck ordered not used. Legally you can do this. I have and I've been paid in full everytime.

we never give a "single" round trip rate. we will work out a total price for the trip then split it by assessing 3/4 of the rate to the headhaul and 1/4 to the return... just for this reason
