Here is something that might stir up the pot a little bit. This thread talks about the shipper offering a certain amount of money for the truck to come home empty. I don't see any mention of the freight broker stepping up to the plate to make things right. Usually I wouldn't be too concerned with what the shipper was offering if I was dealing with a freight broker, because I am working for the freight broker. Didn't the broker offer to top things up a little bit for the sake of saving a working relationship? They usually know the risk of dealing with these paper loads and the fact that they are always changing around. I for that matter, never book a truck to take a weekend pick up for a paperload. I have seen too many times when the load is either cancelled or the pick up time pushed back to the next day etc.
