:eek:For the second day, a group of truck drivers are staging a protest at the Trafalgar South Truck Inspection Station on the eastbound Hwy. 401 in Milton, Ont.
More than 50 truck drivers have parked their gravel and dump trucks near the MTO weigh station this afternoon, at one point backing up traffic for five km on Hwy. 401 and slowing down inspection operations.
There was also a separate protest at the weighs scale in North Bay involving about 60 drivers, which also caused some disruption.

Interesting,

Any idea why they are protesting? Fuel, roads, lumpy cushions, underpaid, no pension, delays at scales, costs of plate renewals, etc?

With this much attention, the reason for the protest is important.

Would be cool to know.

Same idea as Mike

What is the reason behind the protest?

We have the school kids tearing things up here in Montreal. Police are somewhat surprised that when they run at the kids they run right at them, messing them up psychologically.

Even the horseback riot squad had to turn around when kids threw bricks at horses.

The idea of charging our kids on horseback makes me ill. Soon they will be recruiting police from Syria.

At least someone has the courage to fight back when the government is overstepping their authority.

From what I have heard and read, they feel that they are being unjustly targeted by MTO for axle weight infractions. They claim that it is their customers, the gravel pits I assume, that are regularly overloading the trucks and somehow the truck operator is the innocent victim. Perhaps they have a valid complaint, but as has been mentioned on this site in previous posts, it is the driver that is ulimately responsible for the safe operation of his vehicle. If he leaves the weigh scale at the pit knowingly overloaded, what does he expect?

Their claim is bogus. No different then a 53' trailer being loaded at a shipper, once you have the load on your trailer its up to the operator of that truck to ensure the weights are spread correctly. Perhaps the haulers should just be fortunate they have employment and operate professionaly and safely on our roads.

Gravel Haulers...........talk about an industry that should be forced to pay by the hour and not the load, we would all be a lot safer on the roads.

No question about it. You take your life in your hands when you drive on any secondary road that provides a detour route around a weigh station. As well as any road that leads to or from a gravel pit.

They got all upset when Ontario started to enforce the SPIF requirement that trailers have self leveling axles effective April 1 2012. The industry was given at least 5 years advance warning of this date
