The following is from a Today's Trucking article posted yesterday:

LONDON, ON — The Ontario Provincial Police’s June 16 Operation Corridor crackdown on commercial trucks netted 52 distracted driving offences, while officials with the Ministry of Transportation took 11 trucks out of service.

OPP officials reported that when they pulled up alongside one truck driver, the driver offered police a rude hand gesture while he spoke on his cell phone. He was charged with distracted driving, a fine of approximately $490 in Ontario.

Meanwhile, another truck driver, police said, received two cell phone violation in less than an hour during Operation Corridor.

Other notable statistics from the one-day blitz included two drug seizures; 37 seatbelt charges; 15 speeding charges; two logbook violations; and five fines for prohibited use of the left lane.

“These numbers are reflective of ongoing issues we see in collisions involving CMV’s,” said OPP West Region Insp. Lisa Andersen.

Last week, the newly-created Canadian Coalition on Distracted Driving wrapped up its first ever meeting, a two-day working session in Ottawa where it began work on creating a National Action Plan to combat distracted driving.

-----------

DOES anyone else find it incredibly sad that they don't NOTABLY report on how many trucks they pulled over that were SAFE or how many truckers they saw driving PROFESSIONALLY?

As for the guy who flipped off the cop - Seriously? Way to give the industry a good name...idiot.

What I would be curious about too is of the 52 distracted driving offences...were they ALL CMV??

It says it was a crackdown on commercial trucks, but the way they portray it skews the view of the public, I believe. I see WAY more car operators eating cereal, putting on eyemakeup, reading books, texting at red lights etc. I hate it when truck drivers are always portrayed at the bad guys, I guess.

Yes, they should put these numbers into perspective by also providing the total number of trucks/vehicles observed or stopped. But I'm glad the police are checking for distracted driving... maybe they'll nab the women I saw the other day trying to light her crack pipe while doing 70 km/hr.in the left lane at Guelph Line.

Target trucks an Ontario mandate. Safety my ass. It is all about filling Skeletor's coffers so her and her libtard cronies and screw us some more.

Why is it that we get pulled into a scale the scaleman walks around the truck for 5-10 minutes and checks tires, lights etc and if nothing glaring stands out carry on driver. That is an inspection and should be a good mark on the CVOR but no it is a nothing. Yet if they see a light out etc then they write you up charge you and then the bad shows on the CVOR.

Distracted driving is bad no doubt but why just the trucks???

We are an easy target which makes it easy political capital let's not kid ourselves our politics are moving more and more towards the US, politicians are more worried about getting re-elected as opposed to doing the right thing.

This is a great topic of conversation and one that Lou Smyrlis (Editorial Director of Truck News) would be interested in seeing the comments on.

Write in to him and express your viewpoints - he loves the "other side" and when readers write in. He appreciates the feedback. Some other members posting should consider it also.

Alot of good points noted here....

Best way to avoid a distracted driving citation is to not drive while distracted. The police may be targeting trucks because they're driven by professionals who really ought to know better. Just pay attention to what you're doing and this whole issue goes away. As a pro you're going to be held to a higher standard than a non pro..

You took the works right out of my mouth Rob.

Just to be clear if our drivers are caught with a cell phone we have very very severe penalties, the point is the majority of people hate trucks politicians and police/MTO see it is easy optics and guess what? That is what they will always go for even tho we are the safest on the road. And really "don't drive distracted" - well DAH.
