New York HUT extremely long time to clear payment

I was wondering if there's any other Canadian companies having issues with paying their New York highway use tax.

We pay by cheque, mailed at minimum a week prior to the date the taxes are due for all the states that are paid separately (Oregon, New Mexico, NY). New York is the only state where it consistently takes over 4 weeks to clear payment, which adds penalties and interest onto every filing.

I'm not sure how registered letters get dealt with when being delivered to a PO box but it's likely we're going to try that.

Unfortunately, it's not possible for us to pay directly through our bank, and NY doesn't accept credit cards with reasonable service charges ($90 per payment!?)

Has anyone else had this problem, or better yet - had it and then resolved it?

Thanks!

Hi Kay,
We have found that paying by money order seems to avoid any hassles. Yes, it is time-consuming to go to the bank to get one made but we haven't had any problems.
We send the money order by regular mail approx. 1.5 weeks before the due date.
Good luck and I hope the issue gets resolved soon.

An update:

We mailed a cheque via registered mail. It was received and signed for on Oct 23rd. As of Nov 7 the cheque still hasn't been cashed, and we've received a notice that the amount is outstanding. At least now we have proof that they receive the payments but are holding them and not cashing, and we can start complaining about it.

I can only speak for us, but for many years we have mailed out our payment by the 10th of the month and the cheque has always been cashed by the 24 of the month. That includes however long it takes for regular mail to get to Albany Ny. Don't know why it would vary so much from one company to the next?

You're better off to get an OSCAR account and pay by credit card. One of the advantages is that you have immediate access to new and replacement permits.
