I have a 40 ft. container to be picked up in Montreal for move to Edmonton, AB. Container is 59600 lbs (weight and load together). Can such heavy containers be moved by truck in Canada?

You could probably move it locally with a day cab with that weight, but long distance ... I don't think so. You wouldn't even save much time going OTR versus IML on this route ... I would suggest to just go IML to Edmonton and be done with it.

Thanks theman.. will make that recommendation. Would you know how much the railroad can scale?

Actually, might even be too heavy to dray in AB. Probably best to de-stuff and send it as two loads. It's going to cost a lot more though.

The problem is not the railways. It would be the dray.

A container plus chassis is heavier than a road trailer ... because the metal is heavier gauge and also the fact that ocean containers have long lives ... they gain weight through their lifetime due to moisture being absorbed in the wood that is in them.

Also ... dray trucks by and large tend to be O/O spec'd trucks because the vast majority of dray trucks are owner-operated. Those trucks tend to be heavier than fleet trucks, sometimes substantially.

The guideline I always used was to assume 57000# for a triaxle chassis as maximum. A good IML provider with either their own dray fleet or close partners can make sure there is a day cab or small truck with relatively small tanks to handle the 59000#.

If you feel that you must send it by road, Freight Broker is right .... you'll have to split the shipment up ... I don't think it would be safely within weight limits even if transloaded to an OTR trailer.

why not move it to Edmonton and then take some off if you can't find lighter truck to do delivery?
This will be the cheapest option, unless the freight is floor loaded and customer doesn't want it to be handled.

Not a bad idea. However shipper now says they will not allow me to move it rail to Edmonton. They need it expedited via truck.. Heavy and fast.. I told them they need to cut the weight back or have it de-stuffed in Montreal and shipped as two loads.

Would you know of any tridem carriers that run that lane? Montreal to Edmonton...preferable team driver. Lookin for the end of June.
