I know things are slow, but do rates have to go down the toilet?

I understand completely that when business is slow, as it is for most of us now, rates tend to fall. However, we have been seeing some crazy low rates lately from the US upper mid west to Western Canada, especially BC. I mean rates going to Vancouver Island where you would swear the carrier has forgotten about the ferry charges! I am not talking about straight forward TL or LTL van freight, I mean specialized flatbed/step deck/double drop shipments. I would like to give some examples, but if the entities we are losing to are on this site, I don’t want them to see me crying, plus I don’t want my customers identity disclosed, obviously. If any Western based flat/specialized carriers would like to see the gruesome details, feel free to PM me. Warning: the rates you are about to see will cause severe discomfort!

Great..once again i'm not invited to the party.. .. I just booked an Atlanta to Vancouver, BC straight flatbed load.. no tarp.. for $4800.00US..

"he who has the freight makes the rules" lots of non-asset guys in the game dictating rates these days. You know exactly what you're getting with 6000 though.... was that to a broker or to a carrier markhamboy?

Ms Market sets the rates.. Adam Smith invented her long ago.. Wealth of Nations.. invisible hand.. etc..And as slow as it is right now, I'm having some trouble covering a few of my loads which (I think) have good money on them. Sometimes all one can do is try..

The workers at CN haven't been out for even 24hrs yet and already we are hearing...."oh, the rail is on strike so over the road rates are now going to skyrocket". Supply and demand....maybe, payback for months of low East /West rates.......more likely.
