HOLDING FREIGHT FOR RANSOM

So...I hired a carrier to pick up freight in Florida for Kentucky, Saturday delivery. Monday comes, no answer, no delivery. Sounds like it was double brokered and the 2nd carrier says they smelled a rat and held the freight. Now they claim they won't deliver the freight until they have all their offroute miles and expenses paid..of course considerably more than the original quote. Anybody run into this in the US before?
 
Yes, I did in the past. A few times. Honestly, not a lot to do. The ' original ' carrier is probably already long gone - did they ask for quick pay? They usually do and comes back under another name.
Saw that.
In our case, we were not lucky at all, we did quick pay the og carrier and had to pay the second carrier.
Sucks balls. And NOT in a fun way.

Ya, I won't quick pay a carrier I have no history with. My issue is the freight, it has value and customer needs to get to his buyer..
 
@DaveW Do your best to negotiate it down but you are stuck if the customer needs it delivered. Take the loss, keep the customer happyish since it is already late and review your vetting procedures

Don't pay until the truck arrives at the receiver, and the receiver can verify the freight is onboard. The driver can park 2 feet from the dock until payment is received.

You don't want to get burned twice, maybe the freight is triple brokered or worse
