Has anyone encounter this before at the weigh stations. Wheel break not equipped with indicator - Commercial motor vehicle. Highway traffic act Ontario Regulation 587 (Pursuant to section 207 (1). It's not the first and won't be last time that trucks are pulled in for inspection but it was the first time we got ticket for this. Ticket is for $490.00 and it was at Milton scale.

We have never received a ticket for this but this is what I found from the Highway Traffic Act Ontario:
(5) Subject to section 5.1, all the wheels of a vehicle manufactured after April 30, 1995 that is equipped with wheel brake air chambers shall have wheel brakes each of which is automatically adjustable. O. Reg. 229/95, s. 1; O. Reg. 405/16, s. 1.
(6) Each wheel brake referred to in subsection (5) that is equipped with an external adjustment mechanism and has an exposed push rod shall have an indicator that indicates the condition of service brake under-adjustment. O. Reg. 229/95, s. 1.
(7) The indicator referred to in subsection (6) must be visible to a person with 20/40 vision who is adjacent to or underneath the vehicle. O. Reg. 229/95, s. 1.

I believe with the E-logs we will find enforcement of all sorts of rules that were once ignored or unimportant.

Not sure if everyone is aware, but 99.9 % of the time there is an indicator on the innermost part of the chamber pushrod. (the actual pushrod itself is coloured) this would only be exposed beyond the adjustment limit of the chamber.... This law does not state that you need external stroke indicators, it just states that some way of indicating stroke over adjustment limit is being indicated.... I want to say ALL, but to be safe would say 99% of all brake chambers have a 1/2" long clear orange ring on the pushrod once it is exposed over 2" of travel and would be considered an INDICATOR - ref: NSC11B Section 3A - 16. (b)

Few people know there is an adjustment that needs to be made to disc brakes also. There is a hidden Cap and a special 12 pt. head with a special tool that comes with every disk brake caliper. Some of the worst condition brakes I have seen in the trade include disc brakes. And with the cost of the disc brakes, im not convinced they are better than Drum. Everyone thinks disc are soo nice, but there are very few trucks out there that have had disc brakes on them for over 5 years in service.

Agreed, and those few people include inspectors.
Our observations ... with auto shifts, drums will outlast disc brake pads. With manual shifts, disc pads will outlast drums. Unless there is damage from outside forces, rotors and calipers will outlast everything.

^^^^ that I will agree with. unfortunately, the inspectors don't know, and because they think that they know they end up making up their own "rules" and not following their own legislation. NSC 11B

We've got 4 year old trailers with them and as long as you service your equipment regularly you should have no problems. We have not seen a huge cost increase if any at all. The benefits at the scales far outweigh the cost.
