Highlight Motor Freight

Shakey, I think you might be onto something here. Although the load confirmation said the skids were to be doubled stacked, isn't that the shippers responsibility to ensure that they are double stacked? Should the driver be questioning the shippers judgement or procedures? A best case scenario would have been Highlight calling to inform you of the discrepancy at the time of loading, not afterwards. Funny how the theme of communication between carrier and broker keeps re-occuring.

Just to add to the story...many shippers do not let drivers in the building/on the dock to supervise loading. And once loaded, there isn't always too much that can be done. Although, it is true a phone call would have been courteous.

I am surprised that the "stacking skids" problem hasn't been featured on this forum before, or if it has, I've forgotten. It seems to happen all too often yet can be avoided easily if there is better communication between the broker, the shipper and the carrier. In most cases, it is simply a matter of the shipper, or more precisely the fork lift driver, being either too busy or too lazy to double stack the skids. Other times, it can be a misunderstanding between the shipper and the purchaser of the product, who in an attempt to reduce his freight costs, tells the carrier the skids can be stacked when in fact, they can't. In pretty much every case, the driver is not the cause of the problem. The scenario however does seem to happen on Fridays more than other days of the week. It is easier to fill out the trailer and get rolling home with the last 8 skids on the floor than double stack and still have 4 skid spots open. In that situation the dispatcher might have the driver stick around to fill out the trailer at some late loading shipper........and that messes up a good weekend at home for the driver. Just speculating of course.

I find more often than not when this happens it is due to a misconnect between procurement and the shipper. It's especially the case when it's the receiver doing the buying. Carriers should never leave a shipper though until they've confirmed they have what they are supposed to have.

Could be that no one there speaks English very well other than Gary, drivers don't have had shippers complain

I find that Kirk, Val, Serge and Garry all speak English quite well (others too).

If you don't think someone understands you on the other end of the line, explain it again. This is Canada and people from all around the world come here to live their lives.

On topic: I agree with theman, communication between all parties is critical when examining the volume (and destination) of the freight being loaded at a shipping location.

Keep well,
Mike

Having seen this scenario play out many times over the years, I can say that Loaders idea of a driver not wanting to stick around to fill out on a Friday does occasionally come into play. Another far more frequent cause for a shipper not to double stack the skids is that the driver has failed to arrive with any means to secure the double stacked skids. Without cargo bars or straps, there's a good chance those double stacks will be shrapnel by the time they get where they're going to. Part of the brokers requirement from a carrier should be that the truck have onboard the proper equipment to complete the move damage free.

The occasional hiccups but we aren't a perfect industry. As a 3PL, I'm happy with their service and would recommend them.

They open the terminal in LA. This will be problems for the regular Cali carriers I think.

whats their niche? posting 17 new jersey trucks every day and not having a single one?

See they have the trucks, they are just holding out for the absolute highest rate. You offer them $2500 they will move it for you.

They will also do the weird lanes no one else will touch, again for the right money.

I work mostly open deck freight, but called them today on a skid from Philly. I can move it on a flatbed with a tarp for the same rate...

Highlight Motor Freight and Highlight Logistics are both very reputable companies of which have used both. The customer service team, booking team, dispatch team along with drivers are incredible. I would say they are in my top 3 carriers to call anytime.
