Heinz Leamington closing doors, June 2014 740 people out of a job plus offshoot jobs as well. Big loss for alot of people

I wonder if this is caused by McDonald's switching away from Heinz because they hired the former CEO of Burger King?

Losing a client of that magnitude would force a large cut in production no doubt.

Which happened first?

Either way this is a huge hit for the Windsor area, I've some family there who indirectly I'm sure will be affected.

Keep well,

Mike

I heard on the news the other day that Heinz signed a contract to supply a competitor of McDonald's and that got them (McD) really angry and so they have cancelled their supplier contract with Heinz. I think I saw this on ABC news (almost sure) but it may have been CTV

Martinetav - if that's true what you heard then McDonalds is high on their Burgers. Come on, every business out there supply's to a competitor no matter what business you are in.....so to cut Heinz- there must be much more. Very sad for Leamington area.

I can't see this being a knee-jerk reaction from Heinz in lieu of what's doing with McDonald's. This would stem from when Buffett took over, they said they were going to rationalize production and maximize efficiency. Because of our strong dollar and the 'buy American' attitude that exists south of the border, when that happens you know the Canadian production sites are in trouble. The fact that the Leamington facility was operating at less than 50% capacity and the plant itself is 100 years old probably didn't help. This is just the latest of many that have happened over the past 5 years.

The sad thing is it's not only 740 workers at the Leamington facility, where the heck are all of those tomatoes going to end up going? If the farmers are lucky, the production sites that will take over the production will get their tomatoes from them but it's unlikely. Production would most likely go to Fremont OH and Muscatine IA.

The report on ABC news was on Oct 25th and I am sorry. It would seem that some Burger King shareholders purchased Heinz buy going through a back door. The Leamington plant isn't the only one either. I can't see if Leamington is included or not but a report says that Heinz is closing 3 plants cutting some 1300 jobs (abc news nov 14,2013)
