Statistics Canada just released the August numbers for the Gordie Howe International Bridge (opened July 27), and the truck traffic story is interesting.
In August, 34,800 commercial trucks used the Gordie Howe bridge. But get this — truck traffic at the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel stayed almost exactly the same as last year, around 87,400 trucks for the month. CBS News
So basically almost two full months in, the new bridge hasn't pulled meaningful truck volume away from the old crossings. Compare that to passenger vehicles, where crossings at Ambassador/Tunnel dropped 35.4% year-over-year — cars are clearly switching over, but trucks aren't.
Anyone here running that corridor — why do you think that is? Carrier contracts/lanes already locked in with the old crossings? Paperwork/processing still smoother at Ambassador? Or just habit and it'll shift over time?
