Excel Transportation

These guys not only double brokered a load, but tripled brokered it. Went from them to Transport Morneau and on to a third smaller company.
On top of that they damaged the freight.

Customer is a little ticked off to say the least.

Avoid these guys, and yes I do have proof on paperwork that they double brokered it. Transport Morneau is telling us to file a claim, and excel is billing us while the third smaller company has the pics of the damaged freight. Put all three together, and voila, you have proof.

We just recently used them and saw that they double brokered. The bill of lading was signed by the other transport company!

We clearly state on our load sheet that double brokering will result in no pay, although Im always good about it and pay it, especially if there are no issues.

Should I start refusing to pay when I catch a company double brokering?

Don't refuse to pay.....just ask for proof that the carrier who actually hauled the load has been paid, then release your payment. That way you will avoid having the actual carrier coming back to you looking for his money. If the double broker balks at that, then pay the actual carrier direct. Of course before you do any of this, find out if there was a legitimate reason for the original carrier to sub contract your load to another carrier without advising you.

Our T & C are similar although we include that we will contact the 'transporting' carrier and pay them directly. It's the best way to ensure that the company that paid a driver, fuel, lease, insurance, etc.. gets paid for the work that they actually completed.

Thankfully due to Inside Transport, I've filtered out several 'double brokers' over the last couple of years and have hardly had to resort to using the above. I feel a donation coming on... :)

Keep well,

Mike

Thank you for the information.

I find this site a very valuable tool to get and share information within the transport industry!
I will definitely be making a donation!

I just think of the hours of labor (my time which is rather valuable to me and my employer), confused customers, long transit delays and of course my growing ulcer and realize it's easy to offer a couple of bucks to help keep the site running.

Off topic for the thread, but still none the less an important reminder!

Keep well,

Mike

There is a pretty good chance with a carrier like Excel that they are outsourcing the beyond deliveries if they don't service the point directly. All big carriers do it. If a carrier picks up my freight from Montreal to Thompson, MB and does the entire trip than outsources the delivery to Guardwine for the MB portion - than I wouldn't consider it double brokering. Just my 2 cents.

Agreed and well said.

So long as they advise you at the time of booking that there is a furtherance provider involved. I know my insurance provider requires us to maintain all operating authorities and insurances for any party that carriers our customers goods. I suppose failure to divulge the use of a furtherance provider could be classified as an omission but either way why not be clear at the time of booking.

Much more applicable to some shipments that we put huge insurance on such that the transporting carrier would only be liable for $2/lb but the customer is fully protected. These certificates must have the information for all 'furtherance, interline, linehaul, etc..' carriers.

Open communication goes a long way.

Keep well,

Mike

I agree completely. Whenever I'm booking to an outer point the carrier will let me know that they outsource the final delivery and with whom they do it with. It's just common sense, anyone who believes they are shipping 1 skid to the middle of nowhere for $350 and that it is only gonna be touched by one provider is naive.
