The Company I work for is considering hiring a 'part-time' AZ driver. There would not be set hours every week. The driver would be advised with at least 24 hours notice that he/she would be required. The driver may be required for 1 overnight run or sometimes 2 full weeks to cover vacation. Home every day and week-ends. Does a driver with this kind of availability even exist? Or is the Company going to be waiting a long time?

I have a guy that I use who is a fireman (although he's a D Class).

He covers for any of my guys that want a day off.

So, they're out there.

Good luck

I've dealt with "on-call" drivers that work part time. A lot of them are either retired and just want something local or guys that do snowplowing in the winter and want something to do in between farming and winter. You have to give them enough notice when you need them, though. I've known some part-time drivers that were more reliable than the full-time ones. Treat them well and they'll stick around but make sure you have more than just one on the list and have a pecking order for those phone calls!

Every time we get a guy walk in off the street looking for full time work we usually tell him that even though there is no full time available currently would you be interested in part time on call should the need arise. Surprisingly many drivers have said sure and have ended up full time down the road. Plus it gives you a chance to test them before you commit to full time.
