Question , carriers have window times . If you’re 2 minutes late , they don’t pay waiting time . ‘Work in ‘ new broker word . But you show up on time you have to sit for 2 hrs for free , but they have a strict appointment time . Not sure I understand this business anymore . And if you get waiting time . ‘ we “ the broker only pays 50 per hour . That’s our policy . why is the broker deciding what my truck trailer and driver is costing …. Next time the plumber comes over and is late , will tell him I don’t pay for his service , and if we do agree and end up paying and he says I’m 150 per hour I will let him know my policy for a plumber is 35 per hour , used and abused …

Interesting that this topic would come up at this particular time. It seems that we have experienced a number of situations recently where carriers have missed their appointment times at shippers/receivers. These are the times that the carriers requested, not thrust upon them by either us or the customer. I know, delays at previous stops, snarled traffic, etc,etc and transportation, in spite of how hard we all try, does not run as smooth as a Swiss watch. I don’t think any of our customers would close the door if the carrier was 2 minutes late, however paying waiting time to a carrier who was late, and with no prior notice of their tardiness, isn’t going to fly I’m afraid. If you don’t want to wait to get “worked in” which is the shippers expression, then give us back the load and we’ll find someone else. What is the purpose of making a specific appointment time if you’re not going to try and honour it? I understand that there are some brokers who play fast and loose with appointments and paying waiting time, but in most cases, the rules surrounding appointments originates with the shipper, not the broker. It is their facility and their staff, so they get to make the rules.

I get it , everything runs on schedules but If shippers/receivers are so tight with Dock times. Why is 2 hours a standard to put 24 skids from a warehouse to a trailer . No traffic / no previous delays . They have pre set times so know what’s to be loaded and when it’s going to arrive , that’s why the window times . So maybe a better $$ to hold a truck than 30 or 50 dollars after 2 hrs sitting . rates are rough on spot market , all these extra costs come right off a margin that isn’t there . But make sure you’re not late at delivery … or again no waiting time . Exchanging 4 quarters for 1 dollar. As the industry evolves so should waiting time . 50 dollars per hour isn’t covering costs .

Very interesting discussion indeed.
These days ( past 4-5 weeks ) I'm sorry but 75% of our freight moving, is late. Not late 5 min. Late 2-3-4 h even a day.
Montreal to Albany doesn't take 3 days.

Rates have skyrockets, which is the game. All good and we do understand.
But if we have to pay 75% more on a Montréal to Chicago - I do expect to be on time with a 2 days transit. Or paying 2600 Montreal to PA - be on time.
Some carriers took too much to chew on, and now they're choking on the amount of deliveries.

But, being a broker, I do understand Carrier's standpoint and 50$ an hour is indeed stupid. We pay 65-75 depending on situation. carrier's relationship with us and communication regarding tardiness.

I guess it comes back to what I've been telling for years. We need to work together, on everything.

Loose some win some I guess.

Cheers!

I am not sure that this is a matter of what the freight rate is. It is more about just doing what you say you will do. Whether the freight is paying $100.00 or $10000.00, if you agree to deliver at 8AM on Monday, just do it! If you run into problems, let someone (preferably me!) know. A late delivery reflects poorly on the carrier, makes the broker look like he makes bad carrier selections and more importantly, can be a costly inconvenience to the person who is waiting patiently for their shipment. Detention charges should be discussed and agreed upon long before waiting time occurs. Most freight brokers make reference to it on their load confirmations. If it is an unacceptable rate, call them and see if an adjustment is possible.

Is $65-75 the standard for dry van / straight truck wait time nowadays?
Don't know if it's standard in the industry...but below that, with all the costs, it doesn't make sense.
IMO, all depends on the situation. Delivery evening / driver assist / job site / etc...

Sometimes we even pay 85$ - depends I guess!

I do expect on time everytime, but yeah, keep me posted at least if anything, BEFORE the delivery time / date! But things does happen on the road and we do understand we just want to be kept posted is all...
