Loaded up LTL heading south 1500 miles; everything is fine and dandy.
Booked for 10 skids; turned out to be 11 skids. The broker called and started pre-emptively telling me it was the same weight. We had the extra space for it and said no issue will accommodate it; no need to re-rate the freight (trying to build rapport). Advised by the shipper that documents are sent to the broker (they took our PAPS); only BOL is provided (happens sometimes, CI sent by broker later). We advise the brokerage and are told to wait 30 mins. (8:30am).
30 mins pass; the shipper ushers us off the property to start loading day trucks. We head to the border as this was the final LTL pick-up. An uneasy feeling settles on the horizon.
12:00; everything is cleared; broker is aware the truck is at the border awaiting clearance.
14:00; freight brokerage realizes that there is no customs broker on file.
16:00; a Montreal customs broker advised that they clear PAPS; everything is sold to Bay Brokerage. ( a decent cb)
16:05; Bay Brokerage advised me that everything is submitted incorrectly and they just put it on administrative hold until QC CB figures it out.
19:00; truck cleared at the border.
19:00 rest of the freight deliveries have to be reshuffled due to delays at the border.
We deliver as per appointment (LTL) and go to talk about expenses/detention time. ( We advised that we were going to look for extra charges while the detention was occurring)
We ask for detention time and are met with "first two hours at the border-free & you knew this was going to take a long time" & that they have to get approval from their client. WHO are we working with you or your client?
They short pay us 50%.
Are we wrong to charge detention time?
What can we do about this other than close their account?
