Detention Rates

We have found that getting paid for extra waiting time and normal accessorial charges is rarely a problem as long as we are dealing directly with one of our customers. Whole differant story when it comes to collecting from a 3rd party. It seems that most people prefer to tick off the carrier who usually backs down then call up their customer and ask for more money. People will do just about anything to avoid upsetting their customer.

It's funny how much I hear that from carriers on the phone - you're gonna screw me, etc.... the little accessorials usually get handled at the dispatch level. The 'what the hell happened here' orders come to me pretty quickly.

I'll repeat myself - the agreement with the 'customer' has nothing at all to do with the agreement with your carrier/supplier. Except they both use the same BOL as proof of job completion.

Bottom line is if you don't assist your suppliers with extra costs they incur doing work for you in a logical fashion, you won't have any suppliers.

Keep well,
Mike

Great point Mike!
How many times does a carrier hear " oh, sorry we dont have enough in it to pay that"
Many 3PL's never mention accessorial charges in thier quote to their customer and would rather tick off a carrier than open a can of worms with thier customer.
Sounds like you are not one of them.

Keep well too!

I will pay a carrier 100% of profit at times in order to keep a good relationship with both carriers and customers. It might not be a ton of money but something for their time and trouble if I think it's justified.
