I have always wondered how our beautiful Canada Geese decide how and when to migrate.

Do the geese choose one member among themselves to lead the group or does one goose simply get up and decide to go and the rest follow?

Alx,

The way I understand it (thanks Animal planet) is the Goose in front of the pack is Alpha male(geese mate for life) to his right is his mate and they are all mating pairs as the line goes back so if you see geese with one line longer than the other they have no mates..

Alpha male makes all the desisions for his flock..Kinda like a good dispatcher lol.

Useless information but as long as they stay away from me we will be good only thing I see them do is make one hell of a mess..

Very informative answer

I had just looked out the window and saw a flock fly by, and one side was longer than the other.

We have noted for years the first day we see the geese on the pond in the spring. For 6 years straight, even on a leap year it was March 17 (Irish geese?) and there was always at least some open water at the springs. This year it was March 2, and I remember how surprised I was to see them.

Why March 17, and how do they know? How did they know this year to come back early?

More on Geese

I guess we must be on a thoroughfare.

We have seen them heading South for the last couple of Days.

This morning, a bunch were heading South and criss-crossed a bunch heading in the opposite direction.
Can global warming be messing up their guidance system?
