Cummins ISX engine trouble?

Anyone else out there that has nothing but headaches with this engine?
We have a truck out of service for 2 weeks now and counting because it has a mysterious black smoke/power loss issue. No diagnostic test seems to pick up the problem.....Are we the only ones, I am wondering...or does this engine have a reputation for costly problems?
 
2007. Have replaced turbo, have had fuel injectors and egr valve tested. Have replaced diff air sensor, air intake valve, various other sensors and air lines. Have had 3 cummins trained good mechanics look at it and also they have consulted with Cummins. Argh! Now, I am a female, but not uneducated in the workings of a truck and engine. Just wondering if anyone else had experienced difficulty with this engine? Thanks!
 
Sorry we had 8 trucks with those engines but no one can remember that problem specifically.........I will tell you we got rid of those trucks after 1 1/2 years because of all the problems, we usually keep our hiway trucks around 4 years but these never seemed to be on the road so we dumped them. Sorry to whoever bought them.
 
Bring the truck to Cummins Mississauga ask Oleg to look into it he'll figure it out. As for our experience with ISX it's next to best engine out there at least for that year it is for sure
 
The '07 engine platform was an absolute disaster for most engine manufacturers. If you look @ truck prices you will find '07 models being discounted due to the fact that the technology was new and there were countless problems with it.

You're referring to year 2007 model year 2008. 2007 model year was the last batch of trucks without regen system thus making them descent trucks (if you don't count the EGR that is)
 
We had a fleet of approx 60 2006 ISX...went through literally hundreds of EGR valves. They updated, upgraded and changed them over and over, Cummins switched manufacturers from Mitsubishi to Bendix or vice versa...They were just not good EGR system for us. They eventually got it licked, but it took awhile.
Unfortunately, what are your alternatives? They all have their issues.
And the cummins will not necessarily give you a code when the EGR starts to fail.
Also keep in mind a 2007 truck may or may not have a 2007 engine. They would have started making 2007 trucks in Feb '06, but engines don't switch model years until Jan 1.

Thank you everyone for your replies. We have heard over and over that this engine has a miserable failure rate for the EGR valve. My frustration comes from the lack of ability by professionals to diagnose the problem. If Cummins knows this is a huge problem, the tools should be in place to properly identify the cause of the problem without spending thousands of dollars guessing each time. Either that or recall the faulty valves (in my dreams!). But these engines seem to blow through turbos like crazy too. Thanks again everyone! Have a great day!
