"safe guards to assist in protecting you" like?
If he does have small children and he was that worried about it - he would take the unpaid leave either way. Broker looks at labour as a commodity=bad, Carrier = good?
safe guards as in information, cleaning items for truck, office has been segregated (drivers kept seperated from office staff) limiting contact ect. Labour commodity???? well if everyone wants to play the card hay look out world shut down, also he has history of not wanting to work, but I am willing to take time off with everyone else lets do it! As of today lets do it! Ya that will happen, seriously!!!

Safeguards, information, cleaning supplies, policy's/procedures, more enhanced cleaning of office's, ect.!! Labour law says (according to lawyer) you can't just take a unpaid leave for no reason, without company authorization, so then use Covid card!! Ok company can "make" you take test, if you refuse! well here we go. ?? Why would you refuse & you can't if you are stating you maybe infected government says you must be tested to confirm & then self isolation. .

Broker looks at labour as a commodity=bad, Carrier = good? ??? this makes no sense

I just had a call from a client letting me know they are putting a sign at their shipping door for drivers to call them upon arrival and then back up to the door. They are asking drivers to stay in their trucks, loading the freight and then placing the docs and BOL signed on top of the freight. Their expectations are for the driver to pull out and prior to closing the doors to grab the docs, sign them and then move on. It's important to note this is not a busy shipper, maybe a couple pics per day from there. Any comments on if this would work and or suggestions on how to best handle this?

Anyone having issues with Out of Province coverage for drivers (with regard to US Travel)? We are back and forth with broker after insurance company is claiming the travel advisory for a ban of Non-Essential travel equates to no coverage outside of Canada. Wondering if anyone else has run into this and what has been done? or if everything is good and your coverage remains in place who are you with and do you have a contact?

Is the driver still responsible for weight distribution of the load if they are not permitted to communicate with the shipper to tell them how they would like the freight put in your trailer?

It's an important detail I'd say,
Mike

Good point. I think with our regular shippers where we have not had an issue ever with the weight distribution, we are good, but any heavy or specialized / different freight, we will have to address this.

Had a few other customers stating they will meet drivers outside and not to enter the building...

Never mind the TP....... I suspect a lof of the panic is created from the news from China and now Italy and Europe.
The full lock down of Toronto or an entire province seems unthinkable for most of Ontarians, but so it was for Chinese and Italian populations. Let's not forget that the population of Canada is a lot less homogeneous and travels to all parts of the world more often. I believe one should prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Our health care system will be tested, that's for sure. But, Canadian population will be tested as well....
If things start to look bad, I for one see no other way to control the spread of the virus other than by limiting human interactions. This is only effective by implementing an entire full lock down and curfew hour - as it is in parts of Italy and China now. You do that, and it becomes wait and see situation. If in 4 weeks everything is going back to normal, we modify the restrictions. I hope we will never see that, but there is no harm in considering the possibilities. This could be just the tip of the iceberg....

We're having a similar issues. Haven't been able to get a hold of our agents but yes we're receiving notices on the out of provicen coverage and some of our o/o who have individual coverage are receiving the same notices too. I'm looking into some information on this.

Although I am not a Doug Ford fan, I was impressed with one thing he said in his announcement this morning. After explaining what the state of emergency involved, he took the time to explain what wasn't going to happen. No shut down of the Province, no closing of grocery stores, no closing of gas stations or businesses, emergency and essential services will continue to operate. People need to hear more statements like this to help them calm down. We are not facing a Zombie Apocalypse, or The Black Death. As F. D. Roosevelt said, "we have nothing to fear except fear itself". The more positive, reasoned information the public can receive, the easier it will be for them to cope with the necessary disruptions to their everyday lives.

Thus far I'm impressed with how well our various levels of government have come together to deal with this. Hopefully a few more weeks of tough measures and this thing is behind us.

They Federal Government has designated trucking as an essential service and they should still be covered. We checked with Manulife and our drivers are fully covered. If you cannot get a hold of your broker I would suggest finding a new one.

We deal with NAL and looked into this yesterday after hearing different things about insurance companies not willing to cover. We got a response within minutes with confirmation that yes our drivers are still covered, and also confirmation that they are covered for COVID-19 related issues over there.

The best thing you can do for your drivers is give them accurate information there is so much bullshit out there that they don't know what's right and what's wrong. I try and give updates at least twice a day and and get them to ask up questions and if we don't know the answer we will find out for them. They are going to get tired and all the crap out there will exhaust them but we need them to keep going to keep the stores in stock.
