Christmas parties and gifts

We are not allowed to accept gifts directly from carriers / Clients.
Anything we get has to be turned over to HR and goes into a raffle or the few perishables (gift baskets go into the cafeteria to be shared)
We had a few dispatchers actively soliciting gifts a few years ago which prompted management to put new policies in

So I heard that a Mega carrier in MB also had dispatchers doing the same - and people actually paid a % of the laod $$$$ - not sure if that got shut down...
I know had a broker from Chicago - we did a few loads with offer us a fixed lane if we kicked back $$$ his way ... not our style so had to decline politely... funny thing we had another broker call us on the same lane

That seems to be the case with alot of brokerages, so we try to send something for the whole office like a gift card for the local pizza parlor.

Every partner company we work with - we have certain "go to" people. Whether it be a dispatcher, customer service associate or repair mechanic. We could just call that company and speak to 'anyone' - but we don't. We want specific people because we know they'll come through. Acknowledging that kind of help personally throughout the entire year with a gift card or small gift - nothing wrong with it. I wouldn't label that as a 'bribe'. I've sent many gift cards to colleagues/friends that have helped me out with something. Going out of your way to always be that 'go to' person should be acknowledged.

Most large corps have an ethics/anti corruption policy that unfortunately does not allow even small gestures to certain people and there really is no way around it as most people don't want to lose their job over it. We know some people we have been working with for over 10 years at some large companies and have not been able to send something as small as a Christmas card with a coffee card to tims. Not fair but it's just the way she goes.

I would send out to everyone... if you single out specific people (and I understand that too) you risk offending others on the team who may feel slighted. Personally I don't send anything. A few years back I sent a case of maple syrup to a customer in Georgia, not realising everyone in that office was "plus size" and (pre) diabetic. Never heard the end of it.. Bill seeing double..Mona in a coma etc. I'm just not big on "stuff".. nice comments and "thank yous" sprinkled judiciously throughout the year work just as well or better.

Worked for a refrigerated carrier run by a family. Every birthday you'd get a full hundred-dollar gift card; but whenever it was someone elses birthday party you'd have to pitch in $20. There were approximately 10 people in the office so you'd end up pitching up $200 in cash and getting back $100 in an Amazon gift card.

Wild to think that they too have an account on this forum.

We used to work for Gourmet Baker (think Nanaimo bars) in Simcoe, Winnipeg, and Burnaby. Winnipeg had a local delivery guy that was getting paid about 2.5 times as much as any other carrier would do the job for. Every Friday he would go into the plant and pay Oscar his "dues".
One day a Gourmet Baker auditor comes around asking a lot of questions. Before they went to Oscar at the plant to ask questions, they went and talked to this carrier. They asked him why he gets paid so much for the work he does.
The carrier was honest and replied "Because I pay Oscar every Friday for the privilege".
The auditor then asks "Can you prove that?".
The carrier says "Sure. I have all the cancelled cheques right here." !!!!

In case you were wondering ... yes, Oscar lost his job ... LOL
Carrier got to keep his though, although at proper rates. Apparently they appreciated his honesty.

That is a different outcome than usual. In most cases the company offering the kick back is tossed out along with the party accepting it. Management most times considers them equally ”dirty”. Nice to hear of a situation when honesty was actually rewarded!

Resurrecting this thread - just got an email from a broker with this request: ummmm... thoughts???

Are you close with this broker? if not then that's quite the email to send out to your carrier list. I understand for customers, we have a few great clients that send out these emails to their carriers because they have a policy that doesn't allow direct gifts and we gladly will donate some cool prizes but for a broker, it just depends on how close you are with them.
