Cheap Freight of the Day

Loaders,

As I said not all brokers are doing it although the vast majority seem to be. I agree the dollar is playing into this for the tightening of inbound loads.

I commend you on being one of the good ones.

I also wonder how the customer is going to feel if their outbound rates increase to offset their inbound decrease.

Most of my own Canadian customers who ship south understand the dynamic at work here and have accepted rate increases... not so much on the small LTL, but certainly on anything that is six skids or bigger.

Problem is Rob, all we're doing is inbound for them. If their outbound rates increase, I won't be getting the offsetting benefit, and if you're supplying us with inbound reefers from IL, please don't be upset if we ask you to sharpen your pencil a bit for us ( I know, it's already sharpened down to the eraser!) Martineav, I'm quite sure that freight broker is not addressing his comments directly to you, or anyone in particular for that matter. The thoughts expressed on this forum are usually general in nature and are just comments on the state of the industry.

Better yet, how about Josh Donaldson being named MVP in the American League? Now that's a ball player!

So true, if you look at 100 successful carriers the vast majority stick to a state or a city and worked it. They got known it the area, developed regular backhaul and did not try to just send trucks anywhere and hope for a back haul off the link. Talk about throwing the dice. Having a truck pointed south without a compensatory return load already planned is a risk that not many can afford to take.

Back on topic. Frozen meat load from NC to Toronto without paperwork ( spend a day in Detroit ) $1600 cdn by our friends at Traffix. Maybe add about a $1000 bucks to this rate for starters.

GTA to Indy. TL, dry van = $600 CDN!!
Clearly they don't expect this freight to travel by truck...... maybe horse and buggy. Even then, it would probably cost more. Gotta feed and water the horse.

With all of the posts lately about cheap freight and the brokers offering it, perhaps it is time for those outfits to be named on this site. Instead of a generic post about X dollars from A to B, tell us who is offering such a rate. We name names when a carrier fails to provide service. Oh, and let's include the names of carriers that are offering their "excess" freight as well if the rate is unrealistic.

Based on all the comments lately (and what I see happening in dispatch), I understood that outbound rates were increasing, were they not? Give them YOUR rate and perhaps they will call you back.

Keep well,
Mike

I didn't have a chance to offer our rate. By the time I got through on the phone, the load was gone at that rate (supposedly). That is what really blew my mind!

Like I mentioned in a different post, many carriers have SAID they are going to increase their outbound rates but how many actually have? We have, but clearly many have not.
By the way, it was Slingshot.

Sounds like a wasted phone call for both parties then. At least if you had an opportunity to present your rate to them they would know that you do service the area and what your price is, you know, for the next load maybe. The practice of 'I need to book this one load now and not focus on next month and next year' I find is usually the newer dispatchers. The ones who have been around a while learn to make the most of a phone call, maybe discuss what other areas we have freight, what other areas the carrier needs loads for the week, get an updated insurance or something, anything that is productive. The 4 second phone call, rate only discussion is a waste of 2 peoples time.

Keep well,
Mike

what seems to happen is the guys who grab the cheap outbound have good returns, probably under contract of some sort, and vice versa for cheap inbound, they have good head haul rates

in every lane you will always be competing with the "back haul" carrier rate. so if you want $1000 but someone keeps doing it for $600 then why would the broker pay more if the $600 guys are around?

this sounds bad but it's reality, if I keep getting that $600 guy and he keeps doing a good job then the 1 load that he can't do I will still be offering it out at $600, it's just the logic behind "moving freight"

anyone disagree with this?
