6 hrs of work for 378 miles? That include loading, unloading, crossing the border, fueling the truck etc.? Expenses related to short hauls can't be computed based on miles alone

micmac - Exactly my point.

Michael - Thank you for clarifying. Just knowing the type of equipment necessary isn't enough info and without going off on a rant, brokers really need to give us all the information!

This is a good thread (even if the title is misleading) because everyone needs to get on the same page.

(Thank you Miss Moderator for allowing it to continue.)

This is actually a hard lane to get a good read on. For the most part, even if delivering to the middle of nowhere in Western PA it usually makes sense as a via point on the way to something else like Pittsburgh. But this destination makes you either add mileage to get to any point where there is freight out of ... or if it's on the way to the east, it doesn't pay your way to get there. I'm curious to see who would do this for $600, and where they feel they are repositioning to for a load coming home?

Some reasoning on my part ... I figured this would take about 7 hours to complete, figuring I would have to get to the shipper, load it, do the paperwork and clear it, cross the bridge, get to the receiver, and unload it (which may not have been until the next morning). Off the shelf rate is $125.00 an hour, then I rounded up to an even $900.00.

Complete transparency makes these things a lot easier. What are the shipper's requirements, who is the customs broker (shippers pay attention ... this is a biggie), is it general freight, or is FDA involved, what are the receiver's hours, can this be done in a day or is it going to take me two days, do I need a fresh driver, or will one that needs rest at destination be okay.

Under the correct circumstances, with adequate information, I probably could have done that load for $600.00. As it is, I had very little to go on.

You don't walk into Payless Shoe Stores and plunk a hundred dollars down on the counter and hope to heck the clerk gives you a pair of shoes that are your size, width, and gender ... why would you treat a traffic move like that?

My first reaction was the location of the delivery - Genesee, PA. If anyone checks their maps, it is in the middle of nowhere hills of PA somewhere between Rte 219 and Rte 15, near the NY/PA border. Yes, I HAVE been there so I know there would be NOTHING even close by for a reload back home. I think $900 is more than reasonable. In fact, that is exactly what I would have charged as well because I would have made it a round trip back to our yard. If @CG Group can get this covered for $600 then that is great for them! They can run their business however they want to. I also have no opinion on their business whatsoever as we have never worked together.
I think brokers tend to forget that the location can trump the mileage, type of equipment required, weight, product, etc.

I'm sure this is a well known saying... "location.. location ... location" and yes it just doesn't apply to the real estate industry.

Location will trump equipment, product, mileage the majority of the time...... Brokers paying good $ to a carrier will trump all of the previous the majority of the time.

I'm curious to see who would do this for $600, and where they feel they are repositioning to for a load coming home?
My question is, does the broker actually have a carrier who quoted $600 or are they just posturing? Did the broker get a quote from a carrier who just had someone available (and threw a price at it just for fun) and when the broker finally submits it back to their customer, and compete with other possible freight brokers, will they get it, call the carrier, and the carrier is no longer available? I am sure that at $900 Michael will the attempt to get this load covered.

I have to agree with Michael - $900 does seem fair for the work involved. This shipment will take a whole day. A full day of tractor, trailer, driver and a service that requires the ability to get a shipment loaded, across the border, pay tolls, be insured, pay fuel, state taxes, and get unloaded. In comparison, I have paid $600USD for some guy to de-van me at the border. He only took 3 hours and only needed a forklift and a guy. Nothing compared to the complexities of what a trucking company has to deal with.

Micheals claim, right from the beginning, is that CG is not the type of company that wants to build a relationship with a carrier to provide a mutual service for a common customer. They want to offer a load in a 'dutch auction' style and whoever charges the least will get the freight. There is no relationship building in a 'dutch auction' style of selling.

One day, I hope, freight will be sitting on docks all over the place and the carrier will have the drivers seat. There will be carriers that operate the same way in reverse - my services will go to the highest bidder and a thread may be started about them.

Back to the original reason for the thread - payment info on this company. I have no history because I have them as do not use because of the issues with their prior companies history. The names you will see in this thread below.

I keep getting faxes from CG Group, looking for reliable carriers. Anyone else?
And, is it just me or have CG Group's comments disappeared from this thread?

Salma,

We keep receiving them as well.
Nope, not just you. I haven't noticed any further comments from CG Group either.

We are here, and like many of you very busy.... If you want to get loads, all you need to do if fill out the fax and send it back - if not, simply advise and you will be removed. Happy Tuesday everyone!

I don't know about the others here, and I'm just speaking for myself, but being offered rates at $1.62 CDN/mile, in a market that's commanding $2.30+ CDN/mile, makes me think I'd really be better off if you would take me off your fax list, take me off your email list, purge my information from your system, and forget you ever spoke with me. Frankly, my trucks would lose less money sitting in my yard, so I guess we'll never know whether you pay on time or not.

cg group, do you know that it cost a trucking company a minimum of $1.65 / mile to run a truck. If you were real professionals you would know this and avoid offering less than that. And, we have expectations of making a profit also so ...

I think this thread has "run the gamut" here. Either deal with CG or don't deal with them. Easy choice here people.

We don't need anymore posts other than valuable and pertinent information here.

Thank you

I know this thread has run the gamut. I really do. But I do want to add that today I called them personally to kindly request they remove my fax number from their list of companies they send automatic faxes to. I have received at least 4 faxes this month, many multiple pages. It is a bit of a pet peave of mine. I politely gave the lady that answered my call my fax number and politely asked her to remove my number. Then she started asking information about my company and when I wouldn't answer the questions, she told me I had to email her to have my fax number removed. I do believe this is contrary to law. I did not have a pleasant experience at all.

Can atleast 1 carrier on this site say they deal with these guys? So far we are at 3 pages of negative comments and not 1 carrier has actually done business with them. As a PQ broker, I've never heard of them, so I will not say anything bad against them. HOWEVER for all you carriers ,I would be VERY VERY cautious.
Just my 2 cents

I started this thread months ago .........months have gone by and no responses either positive or negative so far about CG..................I'm not saying they are bad people or they don't pay, they just don't pay anyone I know and that's all I needed to know. Since I started using this site for credit info our bad debts have almost disappeared, without exception this is the best site on the internet for information about freight brokers...and carriers. Thanks to everyone that chipped in but this thread is now dead to me.........
