Canadian truckers violate U.S. saftey rules:Data

What a load of crap, they have a show on this tonight so they are sending out all these stories to gain interest. It will be such a one sided story.

The CBC is running an expose on tired truckers on The National tonite. As usual you have to read between the lines to get at the real reason for the story. They say that thousands of Canadian drivers violate US rules. True - but they don't say that Canadians have a much lower Out of Service rate than the US home grown drivers. Check the driver OOS rates in the US by country of origin at :
NAFTA Safety Stats (Click on the countries at the top to compare. The Mexican driver stats are skewed as they mostly operate in the 10 mile border zone)

So what is the real reason for the story? A hidden agenda? I'll sum up 4 paragraphs in one line. David Bradley says we need EOBRs. (or more to the point - David Bradley says on behalf of big trucking companies that we need EOBRs).

Not saying I'm for or against EOBRs (they are coming sooner rather than later) - just commenting on how the media can be played.

I bet if someone did their research, 80% of the supposed safety violations are errors in addition and/or missed minor log book information, side or tail lights that have burned out or worked loose during the course of a day.

Trucksafteyguy the problem I have with your comment is have you ever talked to David Bradley or know anything about the OTA? EOBR’s are coming whether you or I like it so what the OTA is doing is being part of the discussion rather than sticking their heads in the sand and hope it goes away because it’s not. Do you not want someone from the trucking industry help make the rules or would you like some government pencil pusher that can barely drive a car to make them? Get involved do something about it if you don’t like what’s going on have your say because people will listen if you present it in an informed and professional manner. I’m an OTA board member, I am not part of a large trucking firm (40 trucks) and my vote counts just the same as 1000 truck member. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
 
Read what I wrote and read the CBC article. The end can be met without twisting the facts and making the proud hard working drivers (the majority) (as well as the industry) look like the bad guys.

(and yes I have talked to Bradley and have been involved with the OTA over the years)
 
David Bradley the OTA and the TTA, what a joke, they do not represent the majority of truckers in this industry, they are only interested in trying to help line the pockets of their members, but as we have seen where is LE Walker, and what's her name the former pres. of the OTA. If this was an elected position by all carriers I might have some interest.
 
Political reality

The CBC an hardly be considered a bastion of in-depth reporting. The various media produce what sells - if it happens to be sensationalism, then that's what you'll see. When you read any news story, just look at the selection of pronouns and adverbs used as descriptors (such as "Rank & File" to imbue a rebellious military connotation to union members), and you will be able to discern journalistic bias at work. I've read about motorcyclists (not the bad biker types), in Quebec rallying to decry a rise in insurance rates described as a "gang", but never have I seen a Conclave of Cardinals electing a new Pope described as such. But in reality, they're all just people. So much for unbiased journalistic integrity!

The reality of any regulatory change in Canada is that it's politically driven. Nothing will happen unless there's some political mileage to be gained, and that includes EOBR's. With an election in Ontario on the horizon, as well as a possible federal election that no one wants, so called "Law & Order" measures will gain traction because of their popularity with the uniformed population at large.

For these reasons, I believe that mandated EOBR's have a greater than even chance at becoming a reality.

Saw the report on The National last night. What a joke. They reported it like it was some sort of revelation. I suppose the next thing we'll be hearing is that children don't like vegetables and fat people like salty snacks. Thank you, Captain Obvious at the CBC.
