All the more reason why brokers should band together and resurrect the NTBA. Now, more than ever, brokers should be sharing useful information in a way to protect themselves and level the playing field. In February 2023 I started the thread about the importance and benefits to the industry of the NTBA. The conversation didn't go very far. If the NTBA or something similar would exist, they could create a carrier list and a scoring system for their members to easily identify newcomers to the industry and problem carriers in the industry. The East West lane here in Canada seems to have experienced the greatest amount of double brokering, misrepresentation and generally crappy service over the last year or so. It appears to have directly coincided with the downward pressure on rates. Could it be that those carriers who entered the market at the peak of the crazy high rates during the pandemic are now unable to function in this current, low rate environment? A couple of years ago when rates were out of this world, anyone with a truck and a half a brain could make a very good living hauling back and forth to Western Canada. A completely different story today. I warn our staff regularly that any freight we have going west must be placed with someone who we have a long history with, even if it costs more than some of the offers we receive. . Yet even then, we have experienced service failures. Frustrating to say the least!

That could very well explain the delays in delivery, the confusion about where the shipment is and the classic…..the “oh, it’s in Calgary, we’re just waiting for a city driver to become available”. That is the misrepresentation I was referring to. Come on….be honest, if it isn’t going on your truck from origin point A to final delivery at point B, just tell me. No need to make this some sort of covert military spy operation!I believe the majority of these loads are traveling intermodal without the carrier saying so. Honestly I don't get why someone would do those loads by road unless there are no IML containers available. It's just as quick, more cost efficient.

You are correct Jim, the NTBA could play an important role in identifying the fraudulent, bad actors that plague our industry. Unfortunately, like most other volunteer trade associations, finding enough dedicated people to keep it operational is difficult. Larger associations with much healthier budgets can afford to hire paid staff to send out notices, book events, keep membership lists current, etc. Just like many owners of transport companies, freight brokerage owners are an independent bunch who pride themselves on their ability to “go it alone” without the need for outside help, especially from their competitors. As a previous director on the board and long standing member of the NTBA, I am saddened that more of my fellow freight brokers haven’t stepped up to help keep the organization healthy and viable. It is a shame.
I am not sure what the outcome of that proposal was.I thought that was happening when the members were offered to join Ciffa's now that they have added Load Brokers to their membership. Did the new board not happen?
