Im curious if anyone has used digital permit books before and if so what their thoughts are. I see a few platforms offering it and the features seem interesting.

We have had some issues with enforcement wanting the physical document in their hand. I have just settled with the fact that they are only updated twice a year so a book and paper checks all the boxes (for now).
The law/expectations have not kept up with technology offerings. Hopefully more jurisdictions will just go by the plate and have all the credentials they need in their little black boxes and we need nothing more. CBP is there already.

That is helpful, thank you Jim. I agree that the regulations and acceptance is lagging behind the various offerings in the market. A unified system where all credentials are stored would be nice to see one day.

Depending on the area of operation and commodities hauled there might be much more than 2 updates required to a paper permit book in a calendar year. At the start of the year for any annual permit (IFTA license, UCR receipts, CBP receipts etc), an update for your IRP renewal, an update in July for the annual 2290 HVUT schedule 1 receipt, an update for every states alcohol permit since they renew every 12 months from when they were issued, etc. Those are just a few scenarios that come to mind. For international fleets with hundreds of trucks ensuring their paper permit books are up to date can be a nightmare.
