14-vehicle pileup that killed at least 2 on Highway 400 like 'Armageddon'

Impaired/distracted, either activity can put you and other motorists at risk, and both activities can be avoided. I agree, perhaps there should be a way to deactivate cell phones when a vehicle is in motion....cars and trucks alike. We will have to wait to see the final outcome of the investigation before any of us can cast blame, however, there are similarities between this accident and others this summer that indicate the signs of a truck not slowing for stopped traffic. I think that was the point of the OPP commissioners comments on the news. Regardless, a terrible, unnecessary loss of human life combined with a dramatic economic impact.

Rob, you need a little more context with that statement ... I suspect you mean the unstoppable 14 hour window, correct?
And yes, I agree with that. I see that the U.S. is doing a study on bringing back the split sleeper berth. I suspect they will "find" that it is a good idea. The 14 hour rule, as it now stands, regardless of paper or ELD, is the catalyst for the perceived lost production when the ELD mandate comes into effect, because if you are running legally, it doesn't matter if you're electronic or paper. The rule itself is flawed. It requires drivers to work when it may very well not be safe for them to do so. A good example is a run that starts at midnight. Mother Nature, by way of circadian rhythms, says that homo sapiens have to sleep between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM regardless of how long they have been up (some people's rhythms are a bit different, but there is essentially a 2 hour window in which the human must sleep). The unstoppable 14 hour rule says that the driver must work through that period or risk having to work an extra day. The driver is being pushed beyond his/her physical limit. It's about the same as asking a brain surgeon to go to work regardless of how much he had to drink at the office Christmas party. It's a crap shoot.

As far as the 400 accident goes, I suspect you will find that the truck driver that is believed to be at fault, either suffered a debilitating medical event, or was busy on his cell phone. Personally, I'm betting on the latter. Either way the fault lays directly at the feet of government. If it was medical, the MTO should have picked it up during his physical. If it was the cell phone, then the Provincial or Federal Governments should have mandated cell phones not operate when they are moving when it became clearly evident that distracted drivers kill more people than impaired drivers. If Pokemon Go can do it in a game, then Apple, Samsung, and Motorola sure in as hell can ... they make the damned phones. Surely today's "Smart" phones can tell if they are moving and should be able to know enough not to send or receive a text or data at all, or allow an incoming or outgoing call if it's not connected to a Bluetooth device.

My personal pet peeve ... Impaired driving costs you a 10 -15k lawyer and your license for a year (the first time). Distracted driving costs you a piddly-ass fine. When the end results of an accident involving either impaired or distracted drivers is the same, why are the penalties not the same? It is my personal belief that if Johnny Law catches you texting while you are driving down the road, it should cost you that 10-15k lawyer and your license for a year ... the first time.

FFS people ... is your Facebook status or Tweet that important that it's okay to risk someone else's life ???????

If there is a God in heaven, I beg of you to bring us autonomous cars TOMORROW !!!!
Mike very well written. I personally think they should criminalize cell phone use. Screw just a little fine. Put their asses in jail, take away their license. Remind them that driving is a PRIVILEGE not a right.

For all we know now this wasn't distracted driving at all.. could also have been a heart attack or stroke or maybe a mechanical failure of some kind. We just don't know at this point.

I seen on Facebook some guy posted he seen the whole thing and the driver was cut off and had no time to stop. It must be true it was on facebook and I hope for all of our sake it is.

I never thought I would say this - but I really hope Facebook is right!!

BTW, has anyone ever tried to stop a tanker...FAST? I sure wouldn't want all that fuel sloshing forward on me - baffles or not.

I hope so too. But if it is I wonder if it will still get any media attention if it was a four wheeler....
Sad

The media should do a story on driver hiring at the tanker companies. They'll find that those companies screen quite rigorously...I had a relative apply to haul B Train tanker in Ottawa a few years back. He didn't pass the screening because he did not have a lifetime clean driver abstract.. nor does he have perfect 20/20 uncorrected eyesight. I don't know if they're all like that, but I would think only the best of the best get to drive those fuel ladden B Trains..

The problem I have with the OPP saying it was the driver of the trucks fault and that inattention caused this accident, is that the fires were not even out when they made that statement. There is no way they could have completed an investigation in that time and have a determination beyond a reasonable doubt that the commercial driver was at fault. Its easy and popular with the public to blame the big bad trucks, but its irresponsible to do so with out all the facts. The driver very well was at fault, but on the chance he was not it is not fair to that driver, his family, the company he drove for and the industry as a whole to put that out there before the investigation can even be completed.

@JN1981 ... Bingo !!! You hit the nail right on the head. What if he was the perfect, text book driver, and it was at that exact moment he had a brain aneurysm, or a stroke, or a bullet went thru his windshield? They will never know because the driver, and his truck, have been thoroughly immolated. That poor guy will always be remembered for "armageddon" all because the police chief said so. That was very wrong of authorities to prematurely come to that conclusion.

Note from report. "The tanker trucks essentially acted as "bombs on wheels," he continued." - could this be terrorist related?

My thoughts exactly. Who is to say some dumbass 4wheeler did not cut in front of him in his stopping distance or he had a heart attact or whatever? SGT Camera Schmidt Cam's replacement is another truck hater all the trucks fault bs cop that is too quick to place blame squarely on our industry. That being said there sure are a lot of trucks from a certain town involved in a lot of these accidents that have shut down the 400 series in the last bit. I personally blame the 14 hr window and speed limiters. It will get worse before it gets better folks and the 14hr window has to go if it is about safety.
In regards to your comment on "a lot of trucks from a certain town", I see many of these at our docks from time to time with 3 drivers in a truck!!! How does that make for good safety and free from distraction with not two but three men in a truck??? Its a truck, not a Livingroom for goodness sake!!!
