Sun Transport does What Sun Transport wants....they will service their direct clients over broker freight every time. Not a criticism, just the truth. As long as you know this you can make an informed decision

Broker is most definitely a customer especially if loads got good money on them

Agreed - however, in my experience, some carriers see it differently; especially those who have direct clients, in the end they need to service regular business over a one-off (in their eyes) shipment.
Again, not a criticism, just my perception.
No different then brokers. Of course my direct freight is going to take precedence over brokers loads. That being said i have sat customer freight for a brokered load IF it is a regular broker and they need help and can make it work we will. Relationships is what it is all about.

Taking customer freight over broker freight is actually the right decision. Taking freight and giving it back is not. If their direct customers are really only tendering at the last second, it's not a good direct customer relationship. Carriers know what they are being tendered and when at least a couple of days in advance.

When I was in the business, I had a big piece of contract business that we used Sun on and they were actually good. A broker relationship ... but contract ... no spot rate bullcrap.

No, never with them at least on the beverage side. That said, they're not the only ones working for Pepsico ... pretty much all the larger carriers do, and they would offer their trucks last second if Pepsico didn't use them rather than throw freight back when they did.

In my experience , customers award contracted freight very much in advance of ship date to ensure they will have the fleet capacity they need

Little bit of insight with Pepsico for those who aren't aware, they dont operate like your typical Contract customer. Yes you bid for lanes, yes you are awarded and very much provided with discussed volume, HOWEVER its not guaranteed! With food and beverage companies production issues are typical and quite often and Pepsico runs into this quite frequently. The problem lies when scheduled loads get cancelled around 15.00 or 16.00 pm the day before and now you have a truck to cover right around EOD. Pepsico has a clause in their contract to also not have to pay any TONU unless its within 2 hours of the scheduled pick up, so SOL trying to recover some costs. Obviously im not familiar with Sun Transportations operations but my guess is they prebook spot freight in advance to make sure they have loads to move in the likely chance that Pepsico cancelles on them last min. And ofcourse if pepsico gives them a load then you turn back frieght from the spot market. Not the way to handle the situation but I can see why they might be doing this.

I wouldn't ruin relationships with brokers for Pepsico for all those reasons stated above. But I totally understand a carrier attempting to attain regular business from a large regular shipper and understanding the pitfalls including those clauses in their contracts.

couldn't agree with you more, but hey at least you get a nice and shinny "top supplier award" paperweight ;)

Brokers can be customers without a doubt, we have many brokers we work with that treat us better than some of our customers and stick with us through the ups and downs of the market and we provide consistent capacity to them. That being said customers should always be your top priority however last-minute cancellations put a strain on the relationship your brokers have with their customers and you should always consider that. If you are constantly canceling it affects your bottom line, that broker may have that one backhaul load you need on a Friday and won't use you because of the risk. Just my 2 cents.
