Hi guys,
What are your companies (brokers) doing to avoid double brokering and prevent fraud? I’ve been seeing an increase in carriers double brokering loads and then not paying the carrier who actually moved the freight. Any good ideas or processes that have worked for you?

As a broker I'm ONLY using company that I know and trust. Will not use new company. Not worth it.

I almost exclusively do the same, use carriers I've known for years, very rarely do I take on new carriers - and if I do, they're very thoroughly vetted first.

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, it depends on the customer but we are upfront with them, we have a trusted parter at x rate. If they want a cheaper option we have x that we have never used if you want to gamble.

Checking on here, asking the shipper and consignee who actually picks/delivers.

If it takes too long for updates or you get them on the phone and they can't answer you about where it is then that's a red flag.

On the carrier side I would have to say if you are not vetting new brokers you are also out of your mind as way too many scammers out there.
THIS

Especially right now. There's zero need to risk anything.

Anyone taking a load from a broker that isn't "known" is absolutely bat shit crazy.

I have some brokers who it seems are double brokering, but from other brokers i already work with. i dont want to name them but i realised once the POD came in. kinda sucks as it lowers the rate on our end with one more person eating off it

Your best bet is to call the original broker and get to the bottom of it. Don't let it fester. Eventually that system breaks down and you'll be going to the original broker anyway to try and get paid. Call the original broker right away and make sure they hold back payment until you're paid.
You don't want to continue to do business with a freight broker who double brokers freight.

Just like what Jim L mentioned. your best bet is talk to the original broker. EVEN if you do get paid by the party that double brokered. Trust is an important commodity now with all the scams going on.
