Waiting time question

Good morning,
What is the average wait time fee paid (per hour) to carriers with open decks?
I have a situation where the carrier was supposed to call 24 hours ahead for a delivery appointment (on the load confirmation) and that wasn't done. The receiver signed the BOL: In at 7:45 a.m. - Out at 10:45 a.m. (Total 3 hours)
We generally allow 2 hours for loading and unloading and we want to be fair even though the carrier didn't do what he was supposed to.
What would you do? Would you pay any extra time? How much would you pay for extra time?

Did they take three hours to unload or did the truck have to wait due to no appointment?

Since the receiver signed I would pay the carrier. But I would be ensuring my tracing department checks back with carriers to ensure they book appointments if you are going to leave it in the carriers hand.

I agree with Shakey. If there needs to be an appointment, make sure you discuss this with the carrier at the time of booking. Don't just assume they will notice it on the confirmation. Then follow up to make sure they do make the appointment. Happy Friday everyone!
 
As a broker I always book the appointments myself.. always. I ask what time the carrier wants first and then call the shipper or receiver to setup. In 20 years I've always done it that way.. carrier never books the appointment, and its never been an issue as they'd sooner have me do it anyway. I do that because I can rely on myself to do it, and simple thing like no appointment can morph into a service failure (which goes against my service record) or worst case a claim where the material sits on the truck for an extended period. In your scenario beep beep I'd leave well enough alone.. 3 hours from arrival to unload is pretty good given the driver had no appointment.

Shakey - They did not know he was coming so it took some time to get everyone geared up with the loader to take the product off his flatbed
Freight Broker - I don't want to start booking appointments for truckers that, half the time don't even know where their truck is. I've done it a couple of times and I usually wind up looking like I don't know where the truck is (read idiot). It's not that hard for the driver to pick up his phone after he is loaded and call the receiver and tell him where he is now and what time he "should" be on site for delivery.

You have all given me something to think about.

Not hard for the driver to pickup phone... but as illustrated here.. most of the time they won't do it. They WILL however pickup the phone to call for extra compensation. Most of my customers (where delivery appointments are required) require that the delivery appointment is booked prior to load pickup. This is to avoid having the load picked up only to discover that the receiver cannot take it until October. In my experience most people are not detail oriented other than noticing the posted rate.. they will not even notice whether appointments are required or not or whether dunnage is required or whether the load needs to be tarped. They will send in a reefer to pick up a steel coil because they didn't notice that load required a flatbed.. yup.. happened to me several times. All of these details can involve huge cost if missed... which is why I'll take care of them myself.

$60.00 to $75.00/hour is what most carriers ask of us for open deck waiting time after 2 hours (1 hour locally).

If only, I would gladly pay that to keep the carrier happy. The issue I'm having is that this carrier is saying (after the fact) that " our wait time is $185 per hour". Our load sheet specifies everyone's duties regarding detention or wait time.
We must be notified if there are any issues at pick up or delivery and only then can we do something to help the carrier out. Carriers can scream until the cows come home but if you didn't do what you were asked in the 1st place, how can I help you out?
Just expressing a little frustration on my part is all. 99.9% of all the carriers I use are beyond reproach and just simply amazing but everyone remembers the ONE carrier that spoils it for everyone. Sigh...
 
They got delayed because they didn't do their job and now they're asking for more money? Wow..I would tell them flat out to forget about it. Likely you won't hear from them again.. which wouldn't be much of a loss.

I don't like criticizing other carriers, but... this is getting ridiculous! I would give them one hour waiting time at the standard rate and that's it. And then make a note in your records to never use that carrier again. Too many headaches are caused when dealing with unprofessional and unreasonable people.

The same theme comes up in almost every topic on this site - if terms are not spelled out clearly in black and white then chaos is inevitable if something goes wrong. Like @Freight Broker said, the more details that you take care of yourself, the less chance that something bad will happen.
 
Here is my 5 cent to it......

Broker is the main customer for the carrier.
"Shipper/receiver" is the main customer for the broker.

Most of the time broker is involving "hundreds" of carries on the same lane for the same "shipper/receiver", so he knows HOW/what/WHEN etc...
My point is DON'T assume and DON'T be lazy... pick up a phone and/or email ... make sure the"extra" thing that you need to be done will be/ is done.

At the time of booking SAY IT ... "I need you to call a receiver once the load is picked up".... Is it hard? no ... (actually for me personally, it would be a red flag "for rejecting this load" (at the time of booking)... I don't what to find after load is picked up that receiver can only take this load 2 month from now)....

For the odd moron that tries to scam that kind of hourly rate out of you/us - the reply from me is always the same, "I can give you $75.00/hour for your waiting time or I can give you $0.00/hour for your waiting time. The choice is yours." - They always come around :) But agreed, 99% of the carriers out there are awesome and follow procedures. Thankfully...

And our DNU (Do Not Use) list is growing, unfortunately.
 
Don’t let a large DNU faze you. There are thousands of carriers out there and they all can’t be the best. Your best defence is a strong vetting system, to reduce the chances of selecting one of the bad ones. When you’re stuck with a shipment out of a weird location, an up to date DNU list is your best chance to avoid making a bad situation worse.

Load was picked up ON TIME and it was delivered ON TIME
No damage, no delays.....
BUT you will put him on DNU just because hi is asking for 1 extra hour of waiting time ???

OMG... no wonder why your DNU list is growing.... o_O

P.S. Communication and negotiation is key to solve any problem.

Just wondering here when you say open deck freight. is this specialized Double drop or RGN.
We are $65.00 per hr for flats and steps, 1 hr for LTL, and 2 hrs for Truckload
We are $ 135.00 per hour for double drop, RGN or oversized. 2 hrs free, and no free time with crane appts.

It was a full load of hay on a 53' Flatbed going to a farm.
