I think it comes down to more of a love of what you're doing. I started in an organization where the first generation built something but the kids didn't appreciate it, and because of this the business was dragged down and killed once the first generation was not able to carry on. But in other cases (like the 2 largest employers I worked for) tremendous success stories were created.
You have to have a passion for what you're doing it. If it's just for the money it's not going to work.
